Congratulations! The scratching means she is a clean kitty! She is trying to cover the stinky.

Mine would cover IN the litter box and then step outside of it and sort of go thru the same motions of covering again. Looked odd but they instintively cover so....

The kitten will have to bury it. She will do this with both her pee and pooh. Cats are a very clean animal. Do you have a garden, if so after time move her litterbox outside. She will eventually not use the litterbox and do it in the garden. She will still bury it. Install a cat flap and she will come and go as she pleases. Make sure to get her/him neutered. Your vet will advise you on a date but get it done before the mating season nov-feb.

It's a natural instinct to keep predators away, even though there is no need.
I've had kitties since Boo-Boo when I was 5. They are fun, crazy people and if you want a nice kitty, be a nice Momma. After spaying or neutering, his/her disposition will mellow.

Mine have a slight problem with this. They keep trying to cover by reaching OUTSIDE the box. Because that doesn't work so well, they will sometimes spend a good 10 minutes trying to cover it up. Until I go help them out with the scooper.
