I am intelligent but I also have a learning disorder so I can totally
sympathize with those who may not have perfect spelling grammar and what
not ,, I would prefer to be a more understanding human and look past the
inaccuracies and see the person who is trying to communicate
..........indifferent

IS my life perfect? No. Am I perfect? No. Is that the only thing
that gets on my nerves? Hell no! But why (as one person replied)
should we accept something just because it's an informal setting? Do
you (meaning whoever reads this) express yourself differently when
you're speaking with your boss or your co-workers than you do with your
friends? Of course you do! You want your thoughts and ideas to be
communicated effectively and so you speak more clearly to your boss than
you would to your friends. This is a dating site and while I won't
pretend to speak for every male in the US I would like to present myself
as an intelligent person who can communicate effectively (something the
ladies seem to think is fairly important in any relationship that last
longer than one night) so that I might place myself in the best light
possible.

Expecting less of yourself because "everyone else is doing it" is
ridiculous, you only end up cheating yourself.

I have a learning disability and I Suck at spelling does that mean i
dont have a right to post things or reply to things cuz I cant "spell"
like other ppl?? Ive been made fun of all through school cuz i have a
hard time spelling and reading.. Not reading the simple things but the
big words i say Ha Ha. I am who i am.. I may not be the "smartest" in
school like things, but i am a smart person when it comes to other
things is all...

jean sure funny I did not say it was a cardinal sin to not spell
correctly.

I didn't say you did. That was a general statement based on prevailing
attitudes in dating forums and other chat rooms on the Internet.

But if that is all others can do...

First of all, who said that is *all* others can do?

...is pick on ones that misspell there words or use certain words
incorrectly. Then that is wrong to correct others and to point it out to
make them stand out.

The creator of this thread was making a general statement and one which
I thoroughly agree with. He was not singling anyone out, and he was not
"picking on" anyone in particular. He was merely saying how 'bout we
tone down the phonetic spelling? For example, is there really a point to
spelling the word "girl" as "gurl?" Guess people think it's "cute" or
something; I dunno.

I myself misspell words not doubt. I'm not perfect and will never be.

And spelling correctly and construting a grammatically correct sentence
doesn't make anyone "perfect," either, nor have I ever seen anyone who
does spell and write correctly say it does. I've always been good at
spelling and grammar, even as a kid and, as an editor, I *have* to be --
but I don't think I'm perfect, and I take offense to people getting
snotty and saying "You think you're perfect" just because I (or others
like me) care about how they come across via the written word.

But correcting grammar of others in here I will not.

Nor will I, but I will express my opinion how I feel about it, in
general.

I will accept others for who they are and how they write.

So will I, except for people who have the attitude that it's "no big
deal" how (stupid) one looks on "paper," as it were.

As long as you know what they mean I don't see what the big deal is.

Well, in general, there is no "big deal." But I'm on dating sites to,
theoretically, meet my potential "Mr. Right." And I know I don't want
anyone who, at least by appearances, is so uneducated or at least cares
so little that they won't make the effort to spell a word correctly or
know the difference between "there," "their" and "they're."

Now if they were writing a business letter yeah I could see the problems
and would help them if I could or show them to use word. Other wis it is
just making a mountain out of a mole hill. All good with me ya want to
correct it's a free world go for it. But then expect the reactions you
will receive.

First of all, that's the last thing I want to do. I work all day
editing; I sure don't want to do it here. Again, these are just general
statements, I haven't, to my recollection, seen anyone making specific
comments about specific individuals, and I know very well that's
something I won't do.

If they want help sure they would ask and would not want to be put up
for display.

I agree.

Speaking as someone who has done a LOT of writing and editing and
proofreading over the years, I will admit I do notice the lapses in
spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. In a perfect world, I suppose
those would just never happen. In the real world, people make mistakes
when they're using venues like this one, and I just don't think it's all
that big a deal.

It would be like chiding someone for not using proper English on the
phone. "So where we going tonight?" Not structurally legitimate, but
people do talk like that. As far as I know, there are no Telephone
Police monitoring our conversations for bad English, although I suppose
that could be a part of the whole Homeland Security thing.

Now, a lot of these posts would need some intensive editing IF they were
in the process of being prepared for publication. But they're not.

In an informal setting, rules are relaxed. That's what makes the
setting informal in the first place.

And, yes, there ARE a few people whose posts I generally DON'T read,
simply because I cannot decipher the language they're using. But if I
can make out the meaning, then a few inexactitudes just don't matter all
that much to me. Believe me, I have much more serious things to worry
about than whether someone writes "I saw too dog's in the back yard."

Lex, that's primarily how I feel about it. Big difference between being
"lax" and having such poor spelling/grammar, what-have-you that you have
to painstakingly dissect every sentence to even begin to figure out what
the poster is saying.

Jean I'm sure you are great at editing I've seen you do it in here a few
time. You are very smart and sure your high in your field. Sure in
college that you might have made straight A's and can see in your field.
That correct spelling most likely drives you nuts the way others use
their words. That is very understandable. But the post was directed to
this site very much so and the ones that do not spell correctly. I will
be the first to admit my spelling is not the best. Yes I do try very
hard to get them right. But I don't always. At least I know I try. Some
in here do spell words incorrect but that does not mean that they do not
try. I know some that if you meet them then look at there spelling you
could not believe it was the same person. My boss is very smart in his
field but hey his spelling sucks so does not take away from the
knowledge he does have. Anywho okay last one for me on this subject. For
I am not going head to head on who is smarter or knows more for I would
be in a losing battle. I did not even finish High School but have my GED
and College hours but that does not make me any better or give me the
right to judge anyone.

Okay I'm off to write if I can figure out were the keys arebigsmile
