There has actually been a study on this very subject. Unless the food lands on / in something that is clearly dangerous / unclean, the research showed that you actually have 20 seconds before enough harmful contaminants to cause actual harm can get on the food dropped. I figure I'll stick with the science on this one and pick up food if I drop it... Or if I'm too lazy for that "con" the dog into eating it.

Always trash it. I work as chef in a restaurant, and had to break my boss of her bad habit of picking it up, washing it off, and saying, "the grill will kill the germs on it". I don't know how many times she yelled at me for tossing out a $30 steak or some shrimp.

It gets the same amount of sh*t on it whether its on the floor for .1 second or 20 seconds so the rule of seconds doesn't really apply. If you really understood what gets on something that falls on the ground you would trash it too!

personally for me, it is 5 seconds. unless i am in uniform and then its when ever I see it and pick it up. u never know when the next meal will come, lol

Yes, the initial contact will get SOMETHING on it unavoidably, but that's not what I'm saying. According to the study, done by credible scientists, it would take 20 seconds to make it even more dangerous than it was from the fall.

I know a restaurant has to freak out, they can't take any chances and a restaurant's flood is usually pretty dirty with the high traffic and potential contaminants. I would not recommend the 20 second rule for a Restaurant floor. The study was done with a kitchen floor washed one a bi-daily basis, so it is probably impractical in real life.

On a another note, how often does everyone here clean their tables? You might almost be in the same boat as the floor if it's not often enough.
