Ok I love the old folks just as much as everyone else, but when the hell should we take there driving privileges away? When are they a hazard to themselves and everyone else on the road? One just backed into my truck this afternoon in a grocery store parking lot after I was yelling and honking at him to stop. rant

Only because the old people don't actually get INVOLVED in the accidents. They just cause a whole bunch of them AROUND them.

Maybe we should just throw them away, just like we do everything else in this Country. What the Hell, they are all used up now. No one wants them. Their Family is too busy, the Government has no use for them. I say just lock them up, and maybe throw them some food, and water every now and then. When they die, just throw them in a hole. No one will miss themohwell

i live in florida,"gods waiting room", i have heard and seen more accidents caused by senior citizens, than you could ever imagine. senior citizens do all the voting and bring in revenue when they move to our state to retire, so of course they do no wrong in this state:smile: when i retire im moving up north and driving slow.everywhere i go.

I hear you loud and clear on this subject. I was at the BMV this week and while waiting in line watched 2 old ladies getting their license renewed. They had to be in their 80's AT LEAST. The one lil lady had a huge urine stain on the back of her white dress coat and her friend had to help her answer the questions that the BMV guy posed to her about "has your license ever been suspended" and all that. They both walked out with their new license and without eye restrictions. I couldn't believe it. I felt bad knowing that she maybe has no other way to get her errands done but for her friend and herself, but it really didn't appear she could care for herself much less drive a car. The one especially had really bad hearing problems and trouble concentrating on the task at hand while he was testing her. I was surprised she got her license renewed.
I hope your truck doesn't have too much damage!

50!!?!?! I SCOFF at 50!!!! Try living around my area with all the farmers, and Otto and Helga decide to go out for a Sunday drive ( whether it's actually Sunday or not makes no nevermind ) and putts along at a nice steady 30 mph ( in a 55 zone ) while traffic backs up for a mile and a half behind them. Also keep in mind that the entire time...they have their damn turn signal on, they are riding the brake so that you can't actually tell when they are stopping, AND the driver can barely see over the steering wheel.

That little fluff of white hair over the steering wheel cracks me up!

We used to draw straws over who had to ride with my grandpa. He spent most of his time on the wrong side of the road in his big beige boat. I think it's a requirement after a certain age to drive a big beige Buick! Someone finally had to make up an excuse so that he couldn't drive anymore. I hated to see his freedoms taken away but he really was unsafe.

Sorry to hear about the oldie backing into your truck. How much damage was done? If they can barely pass their license renewal (i.e. eye test etc,) it still doesn't mean they are SAFE drivers.

Since I drive for 8 hours per day, I see a lot of the elders trying to navigate through the rush-rush madness that dominates the streets and highways.

I've not yet seen a case of an elder threatening or committing road rage.

I do see plenty of busy 'important' people blasting horns and shaking their heads or their fists...in spite of the fact that these very roads and the vehicles that are manufactured owe their existence to the elder generations that precede me.

If God exists (not opening a topic, just saying) and I appear before God at mortality's end, then I shall have no answer for suggesting that elder people were a hazard to my way of driving.

I am careful to watch for dogs, cats, eagles, moose, bear, children, and other unpredictable situations. Younger drivers are far less predictable than are elders, IMO, and are often determinedly rude, careless, and haughty...none of which describes most elders.

Their families can have Occupational Therapists test their driving skills for safety. That information is then given to the doctors for consideration for revoking their licenses or not.
