Protect your legs from rubbing on the animals you happen to be riding.

They protect the inseams on your pants when you are riding a horse or a motorcycle, so they don't get frayed and worn.

But they do make a guy look sexy!!devil

I can tell yall are city folk. Nothing disrespectful intended.

Chaps were originally made to protect cowboy's legs as they were riding through brush - sometimes thorny - they also work really well to keep the legs warm in the winter.

Fending briars and brush away, when I wore them.
And deflecting shearing knives away, too...which takes fiberglass-weave leggings.

Actually the bikers intentions for wearing chaps were for extra protection for their legs if they laid their bikes down. Also in the winter months the leather keeps their legs warm.

For some it became a fashion statement.

So i am assuming the crotchless part gives them more mobility?
