So... I think this could be a very good discussion, if we can be fair and respectful to each-other. Follow the forum rules, etc. Can we do that? Let's see... let's see if we can talk about something pretty controversial and still keep our limbs...

No system of government is perfect, of course, because human beings are a part of it. That said, which do you prefer and why?

Democracy
Anarchy
Socialism
Communism
Republic
Monarchy

...etc?

This is a freaking riot. I'd recommend you provide simple definitions for each. Even people that think they know don't really know most of the time. laugh

Good luck.

Definitions... OK here they are.

Democracy: The political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representatives.

Anarchy: Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder.

Socialism: An "economic, social and political doctrine which expresses the struggle for the equal distribution of wealth by eliminating private property and the exploitative ruling class.

Communism: An economic and political system based on the principle "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need."

Republic: A form of government whose head of state is not a monarch; "the head of state in a republic is usually a president" (This can, by the way, be different than Democracy... )

Monarchy: An autocracy governed by a monarch who usually inherits the authority.

Of course, there are a lot more than that and they can be mix and matched a lot of the time... such as us with Democracy and Republic... Be creative!

Tanz... thanks for being brave and posting your opinion first! You get a flowerforyou.

My own opinion is very close to yours, actually. I think communism is a GREAT idea on paper. Unfortunatley, it just does NOT work out in reality. Again, the human element...

I just recently did a paper on this same topic............Karl Marx of course with this Communist Manifesto and John Locke...........you are right the human element is always forgotten with many of these theorists..........pretty much I denounced these theorist on the fact that they speak as if men are so just and fair to one another but they all seem to forget that MAN IS ALL ABOUT SELF PRESERVATION............SELF INTEREST.............and that is why we are in the situation we are in.................

Yuppo! And that is why NO system of government (or anti-governemnt in the case of anarchy), will ever work entirely. Human beings are fallable. That said, could we get close? Could we do better than we are now? How?

You all know these political theories are just that. Theories.

In practical working terms various political philosophies blend and borrow from each other.

It's a good post and a good question in terms of sharing ideas but in the real world there is no such thing as say a pure democracy.

Your right they are political theories but some of them extend to the fact that governments implement them (or try to ) in their policies and they seem never to work the way they should.

Definitions... OK here they are.

Democracy: The political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representatives.

Actually...a democracy is majority rule...one person one vote. the founders rejected that so one area or group would not dominate.

Anarchy: Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder.

No checks & balances either

Socialism: An "economic, social and political doctrine which expresses the struggle for the equal distribution of wealth by eliminating private property and the exploitative ruling class.

Communism: An economic and political system based on the principle "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need."

These two run together...but they both put govt. in charge of rights & freedoms & can lead to govt. tryanny.

Republic: A form of government whose head of state is not a monarch; "the head of state in a republic is usually a president" (This can, by the way, be different than Democracy... )

Actually...it means representative govt. of the people & their geographic locations. Representative & proportional.

Monarchy: An autocracy governed by a monarch who usually inherits the authority.

I like what we have...a republic. Unfortunately it's been perverted by lawyers & wealthy people & that's why it's so lopsided. Working people need to get back to the table before they steal everything from us.

I'm for good govt. but I'm not a socialist. I'm not socialistic communism where the govt. disctates everything either. I'm also for free enterprize but not what we've had, corp. welfare.

I think we can get back to good govt.

Agreed, sadly. It is a fun discussion, though. And who knows? Maybe we'll stumble upon some ideas -- even small -- for change? Call me an optomistic LIB.

... either I'm tired or the world has ended and I agree with Quickstepper on something. surprised Except for one small thing... define "good government" cuz that's an oxi-moron to me.

i like our Republic but i think we need to get back to the "for the people by the people"part.
I thought Johnson's Great Society was a great idea and if not for Vietnam, might have worked.

Good govt. means everyone having an equal seat at the table & GOOD faith in dealing with eachother. We have to get back to the checks & balances that were once there. Everything has become too partisan & therefore too lopsided.
