Okay I started at a new hospital last week. Unfortunatly last week and today are just the "day shift" for Orentation. Basically sitting through lectures on Hospital Policy. Not THAT bad just slow. TOMARROW NIGHT however i start my normal shift from 7pm-7am which gives me little time to get useto staying up all night. I wish that they would have given me just ONE more day to adjust to the differnt shifts.
Anyone else have to go through this?

Good Morning EveningKiss, or Goodevening Evening kiss, which will be how you feel come Friday am.
Used to do snow removal at a large Maine Hospital this time of year, overnight 4pm-6am. It will take you a while to get used to the change, be careful on the caffeine intake til you do. May take a couple of weeks, best wishes in you new job.

Eveningkiss I spent six weeks with my 22 year old son in a critical care unit during the summer of 2007 while he fought for his life. The worst six weeks of my life. If not for those dedicated to the medical field the nights spent at his side would have been very difficult. You and ones like youself who work nights to provide hope to those families who are hurting during those times are among the unsung heroes many forget to thank.

So even though we have never met I thank you and those like you who sacrifice your nights to bring comfort to families.

You are all heroes in my book.

I work all shifts, depending on what our unit needs. We have 7 AM - 7 PM, 7 AM - 3 PM, 11 AM - 7 PM, 3 PM - 11 PM, 7 PM - 7 AM, 11 PM - 7 AM, and then there's the double shifts and double-backs.

In nursing, there's no such thing as a "set schedule" but we learn to adjust and sleep when we can.

Just remember on your days off, to take time for YOU and not just rest, but have some fun. flowerforyou

(And for the record, I've worked nights since I was 16 years old. I prefer nights but seem to end up on all shift. I tell folks I was born at 1203 AM and have been on the night shift ever since, lol!)

i do the day shift/niught shift thing a lot. I did it due to work for awhile...worked 2 nights and one-two day shifts a week for about six months. its rough.

but in the end Im a born night shifter....i really dont think I could routinely work day shift again. I would be chronically late.

best advice..try to sleep in or at least take a nap the night you work.

RN here , I have been rockin' the 7p-7a for over 5yrs now. I am lucky, same schedule all the time. I do pick up and extra Sat. nite every 6 wks.
Work for 3, off 4.
I pretend to be a day person on my days off. Plenty of time of to do whatever.
The shift diff, incentive, bonus, and charge pay is close to 7 bucks an hr above base pay. I don't have to work wk-ends or Holidays, no call.

However.........
I am almost always 'tired', some people say crabby.
