Yes and yes...His name is Warrior. He's 9 yrs old, had him since he was three. He's a gelded Tn. Walker/Spotted saddle horse. 16 1/2 hands.
He was imprint trained and then through the 5th stage in the Natural Horsemanship Pat Parrelli program. He loves me but shys away from most other men. He loves almost all females however, especially if they use fruity smelling shampoos. He has a great, smooth natural gait but I don't formally rack him because he likes jumping too much, which you aren't supposed to do with a racking horse. There's a pic of me and him in my profile.

Give 'Buddy' a carrot for me (((Allen))).

I to LOVE horses and have one of my own...'Mocha Java'...he's a 6 yr. old Rocky Mountain Saddle horse gelding. He's dark chocolate w/flaxen mane & tail...that's him in the pic in profile. I'm currently working 7 days a week so don't get to ride as often as I'd like. Have some time off for the holidays, hope to get in the saddle before returning to work.

I do not have a horse right now but just moved on to 5 acres that is cross fenced with 2 horse stalls. Not sure where to get started. I have only rode a few times. Any suggestions? I heard of a man that rescues horses, would this be a good idea for a newbie with children?

It's way cool that you get to be around the horses more now...
I went riding on Christmas with the kid who lives across the road from the stables. He was riding a cute little mare that's half quarter horse, half welsh pony. He followed us down the back county road for about 3 miles before he was ready to turn back to his place. He was getting bounced out of the saddle trying to keep up. Buddy was just walking but his mount had to half trot to keep up.laugh
After escorting them back, I turned around and took buddy for about a ten mile ride. It was really quiet on the roads so I was able to give buddy his head and he really enjoyed getting to stretch out.

Hi Laura  flowerforyou

I'm not sure. It completely depends on the individual horse. Rescue horses often come with issues so you'd need to be very careful and I'd advise getting experienced help in making sure any particular horse is suitable around children and calm enough for a beginner.
Sounds like you have a good sized spread for a horse though.

I had only rented horses prior to owning one. I visited a few breeding ranches and did a ton of 'window shopping' on line. I knew what breed of horse I wanted and held out until I found a good deal. I bought 2 horses off a ranch in Montana...Mocha, my Rocky Mountain Saddle horse, was a yearling and I also bought a 5 month old Kentucky Mountain Saddle horse...BOTH were stallions when I purchased them...had them gelded within 2-3 months. Because of my situation, I was only able to have Mocha trained/saddle broke. I ended up selling Sage, the Kentucky Mountain, before I moved 1200 miles to New Mexico.

Rocky Mountains have a 'puppy dog' temperment. Very gentle, people oriented horse.

I have been rideing since I was 4-i grew up around Quarter-Horses and I love the breed! Honey she's a Quarter-Horse.I've always wanted a horse that would do the all-around stuff-Honey she runs barrels and poles and she pleaures also.I had an Quater-Horse gelding that we had to put to sleep in 05 due to blindess-it was sad but it was the best thing to do.I've gotten hurt with horses but I still ride-and wanted to ride after I got hurt.I just love to ride that's what I love to do.if anyone who is new to horses and has some things to ask,I'd be glad to help.

Hi Allenflowerforyou

At first it sounded like a good idea, but I began wondering the same. Not good for a newbie and kids who are wanting to learn to ride. Thank you.

Thank you so much. Maybe lessons and learning how to care for a horse would be a good place to startflowerforyou

I think a good starter would be a pony.

Horses are decent. I've always been around them. Hell I was born on a game farm. I'd rather have a snowmobile.

Laura10-if u want a good start in horses,a good old good broke horse would help-i perfur quater-horses cuz of theyr gentle way.but if you like other breeds that's kool-the main point is that you get a well broke horse that will not buck, and that is gentle.I would not get the first thing I saw-i have done that-bad idea to do that.take ur time the right horse will come along

I agree. The stallions I grew up on were as such--old and well-ridden. A pony can be as stubborn as a donkey, so it really depends on the horse. A pony is lower to the ground and won't go as fast which is why I recommended it. We had stallions and a pony, and I would favor the stallions--even at age four.

The neighbor girl had an older horse which gave birth to one. She had the privilege of raising it and training it as she grew up with it. She's a veterinarian now.

I would definately not recomend a stallion for a beginner or children. huh

Laura I would highly reccomend getting your kids in 4H. They will have lessons on horse care, safty, training, riding, nutrition, pasture management & legal issues for horse owners. The kids will also meet new friends & you will too. The best way to find a good beginer horse is word of mouth. Old "packers", as we call really good kids horses, are usually not advertised, good horse owners are careful about finding their old friends good homes. Once you get to know the local horse people you will start hearing about available horses.

Some great memories of mine are riding bareback on that giant creature around the pasture for what seemed like hours.

There is nothing wrong with a stallion for a beginner or children.
