this topic has been brought up b4 and it bothers me (to a point) i think the reason people do it is so they can respond quickly in a thread and not have to put any thought or creativity into typing something sadly,it's the way it is in this Brave New World be seeing you

Some people are very demonstrative, expressive, and emotional in their writing.
Reading plain text can be very pragmatic, and the reader can't always sense the tone of the writer (sarcasm, etc). Smilies are fun, and an easy way to warn people not to get butt-hurt if they are kidding. Also, smilies can be very childlike and visually amusing!
An argument in accordance with your topic is -- less is more sometimes!
