i know this post will probably get moved to the "Sports Section" (which is fine, and yes, the pun was intended) but why do so called "thinking" adults (coaches, faculty and parents) put pressure on high school athletes to win at all cost? shouldn't we be teaching our kids to be better people rather than better athletes? be seeing you

If you aren't playing to win, then why bother at all?
Sure, it's enjoyable to play, but 2nd place still equals 1st loser.

In general, your statement is correct. However, if the kids talent is a ligitimate avenue to a future education or even a possibility of going pro, I think that mindset has to be instilled for success.
Competition is a good thing.

nope, you're wrong. better athletes get paid more than better people.

I think winning, and attempting to win, are very important skills and values, not just in regards to sports.

Far better than giving every single person on the team the exact same participation trophy, which only goes to prove that perseverence and achievement aren't something for which to strive and that they aren't something which set you apart from the others.

In that case, why bother to give any extra effort?

 but they are kids,it is dangerous to instill a "win at all cost" attitude in them that type of attitude can create people like OJ Simpson and Michael Vick,2 of the biggest dirtbags our sports-oriented "Society" has ever produced be seeing you

Sports have also created people like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron. It's in you not the game.

That's what the programs were intended for .. BUT it seems that like with everything else in life. its about prestige.. the values have changed .. and even in little kids sports look how parents react to the kids. Living their dreams through them. yeah right Mr Music... coming in second is still 1st place loser... but they at least, hopefuly learn better values.

....sports-oriented "Society"....

there is the problem right there. we place to much emphasis on professional sports in this world. people treat athletes like they're gods.

A free pass??? Mike Vick is in jail....O.J. is in jail....Plaxico Burress is going to be in jail....Charles Barkley has to spend 5 days in jail....

Athletes MAY have gotten a ' free pass ' in the past, but I don't think that applies as much now as it used to.

Let the kids play and let them play to win. If your kid isn't cut out for that, so be it. I'm tired of political correctness in sports. Even when the school doesn't keep score, trust me, the kids do!!

because if you play to win you play harder prctice harder devolope discipline and become a better player

There are athletes that excel at their given sports for a reason -- they're GOOD at them. As Lisa said, not every kid on the team should get a trophy, because not all kids are DESERVING of a trophy. By definition, sports embody competition. SOMEBODY has to win, and the accolades should go to the person(s) who work hard enough to earn it.

Glenn also mentioned being tired of all the political correctness bullsh!t. This does not just apply to sports only, but all walks of life, and I wholeheartedly agree. People have become too coddled, too afraid of the truth, too afraid of getting their little feelers hurt, and I'm light years past sick of it. When we were kids, not everybody made the team. If you weren't good enough to make the cut, you got sent home to try again next year. You accepted that, and you dealt with it. Nowadays, everybody must be allowed to participate, or else they'll raise holy hell about it. I think that's horsesh!t.

sorta like the kid who was banned from Little League last year because he was too good and the parents of the other kids who werent as good complained

no more tag in schools, no more valedictorians

we are raising a generation who embraces mediocrity
