So, say we're able to form a somewhat Utopian Society...do you really think that most people could put aside their egos & understand that a construction worker (or whatever) is just as important as a doctor or physicist? Just how "equal" do you feel your neighbor is to you?

Everyone who provides vital services to a community is important. I don't care if it's the local doctor or the trash guy.

I try to remain optimistic, so I would like to think that most people think that we're all equal. I don't feel I'm inferior or superior to anyone, as far as economics or "class". I do feel inferior to great people who have done amazing things for other people, but that's not what this thread is referring to, right? Sorry!

Funny you should mention those very occupations, T. I've said the same thing many times before. The doctor is ALWAYS going to be looked upon as the person of wealth, with all the possessions, and the big, sprawling house with all the bells and whistles. Nobody will ever give a second thought to the poor bastard who BUILT this house for this doctor to keep all his sh!t in.

The thing I find most ironic is, people seem to have a general mindset that being a doctor is a learned art, requiring years of education to be proficient at their craft. Nobody seems to realize that this exact same thing is true for the lowly construction worker. However, the doctor is always the person who will recieve all the wealth and accolades, despite the fact that he's most likely never known which end of a hammer to hold in his life.

I never could figure out how a doctor could justify being worth so much more than the guy who made his home a reality.

Think about it: When you ask a person what they do for a living, and they say, "I'm a doctor," what is your first immediate thought? Prestige? Wealth? Possessions? Now....have someone answer that same question with, "I swing a hammer." NOW what's your first immediate thought? Where is HIS prestige, wealth, and possessions? What makes one guy more deserving of it than another?

I treat everyone the same. I don't look down on anyone for what their profession is nor do I look up to others. We all have a role in how this world evolves.

Agreed, Keith & I don't mind admitting that I was thinking of you when I mentioned "construction worker"... Us "lowly" people can be just as smart as the doctor who went through many years of schooling...in fact, I think a lot of us have more common sense, too!

And in these economic times...when the rich are STILL getting richer...I always wonder: If Society collapsed...who do you think would be the survivors?

Funny thing - I am friends with one of each. They are quite similar.

Any guy who can fix stuff, build stuff and remove unwanted things is ok in my book.

I'm sure there are some wonderful Drs. out there, but with the experiences I've had with them, I'd trust a construction worker to diagnose my ailments before I would most Drs. If I met someone and they told me they worked construction, which I have many, many times, I sure wouldn't think that was menial work, or put them in a lower "class". I used to work for a civil engineering/land surveying firm, and in those many years, I met some pretty smart, funny, wonderful construction workers.

What about the veteran homeless guy that stands on the street corner and philosophizes?

I would want him on my side in a post-apocalyptic society.

You can BET on it, sister! A construction worker could take some boards and nails and make something out of it. The doctor would just look at it like a monkey doing a math problem.

Of course...I mean he must have learned to do SOMEthing at some point. All you have to do is help him remember it so he can do it again.

Actually, we'd still need a doctor...but it would be on the BARTER system this time around... I think a shelter for an operation would be a pretty good trade! And two chickens for setting a broken bone...!

I agree, and in my opinion, no veteran should ever be homeless.

In my many years in the service and as a gov. contractor, I have learned some great suvival tools. Follow me if your thirsty, I have had the..."pleasure" of drinking camel squeezings. I have a medical background as well, as a backyard Gyno Welcome to my nightmare.

I can make soap, bake bread, take care of an open wound with a tampon, superglue and dental floss, and shoot my own food. I'm not worried.

You should meet my friend, the doctor. He is a fix-it-man kind of guy.

Three words - impossible.

For the same reasons we can't get into alternative energy. For the same reasons our government fails to properly govern. People cannot get over themselves and are in bed with everyone.

But it's ok because the reason our world is in trouble right now is because we are undergoing evolution. All our past constructs and ideas are no longer relevant, thus they must me recreated. Nothing goes totally unchecked.

And if things continue in their direction construction workers and cops and firefighters and theblike will be the only people with jobs! Lol. How's that for utopia!
