I just downloaded gimp, I am trying to add text to a picture but can not
figure it out at all. I go to the help site of the program and it is
telling me the help part was not installed. So can anybody PLEASE help
me?

AB, I've found abundant free help online for the GIMP, as well as free
downloads - WHERE have you seen people charging money for GIMP help?

I'm sure someone somewhere is charging money, but I'd really like to
know who. You have any links for that?

Whisper, I don't have GIMP running on this machine, but I think you use
the "T" icon. Then you either click where you want the text to start,
or you click-and-drag to draw the box into which you want the text to
go. After that, select your font & font size and you just start typing.

You can get fancy with 3-D text and other text effects, i think that was
under a different menu option.

But I'm guessing you have already done this much, and are having a
slightly different problem?

Okay, I just installed GIMP. Comes up with two windows, main and
layers. I do File->Open and it opens a third window for the image. I
click on the "T" and the bottom half of the main window changes, to let
me change options for the text I'm about to write. I choose the color
that I want, the font, and the text size.

Then I just click once on the main image where i want the text to start.
A Dialog window asks me for the text to use, i enter it "test test
test", hit close, and the text appears on the image.

I do file->save, and since its JPG (vs native GIMP format) it wants to
make sure that I really want to flatten the layers - combine them into
one. I say yes, and click the export button. Done!
