TAIPEI (AFP) – A Taiwanese man who lost two million US dollars in Las Vegas is threatening to sue the casino for using feng shui to cause his losing streak, a report here said.

The man, surnamed Yuan, alleged that the Venetian dug a one-metre (40-inch) square hole on the wall of the presidential suite he was staying in April last year and covered it with a black cloth, said Apple Daily.

The casino also put two white towels in front of Yuan's suite and turned on two large fans facing his room without notifying him, it said.

Yuan claimed that his luck turned bad after discovering the arrangements and that he went from winning 400,000 dollars to losing two million, the report said.

"We Chinese drape black and white cloths only when there is a death in the family. It is such a taboo for regular people, let alone for the gamblers," he was quoted as saying.

Yuan filed a complaint against the Venetian after returning to Taiwan and demanded the cancellation of a two-million-dollar debt to the casino, half of it on credit, it said.

The casino has promised to refund him 100,000 dollars in cash and the same amount in chips, the paper said, without explaining why it had agreed to this.

Yuan had notified the Venetian through his lawyer of his intention to sue for feng shui sabotage if the casino fails to come up with a "reasonable solution," it said.

Feng shui, or wind and water, is an ancient Chinese belief that seeks to channel good and bad psychic energy through the arrangement of furniture and ornaments.

There are some common feng shui taboos among Taiwanese gamblers, such as bringing a hair brush to a gambling table as "brush" is a homophone of "lose," the report said.

I would argue that it was self fulfilling prophecy. If I were him I'd take the 100g's and be satisfied. Feng Shui will be the least of his concerns if he pisses off the casino.

lol very true. can't see a casino catering to someone's feng shui and did he not see this as soon as he went into the casino?

That is what I was thinking when I read this, if he noticed these things he should not have gambled. Why the casino offered to pay him anything is probably so as not to loose other gamblers. But I think it's ridiculous, and they are setting themselves up for more such suites by paying him off. How the hell is any business going to cater to everyones habits..

I got a book about feng shui, and after reading several chapters I put it down and thought, there's no way I want to take all this superstition into my head, as if I don't have enough to think about on a daily basis.

Geez, what's next.

I think you'd have to believe it first. I always won with other peoples money, but the minute I tried gambling with my own I lost 2,000 in about 10 minutes. That was 30 years ago, Never gambled again.

This is what I (mis?)understood: He lost a million cash, and owes a million more. They forgive 100,000 (he now owes 900,000) and entice him back with another 100,000 in chips. If he accepts, pays his remaining debt w/o a fight, and returns to gamble, the casino wins! This is not a settlement, its priming the pump! I doubt any court would entertain the threatened lawsuit, so they need not fear frivolous lawsuits. They do like the players who lose a million or two in one visit, though.

My friends at the time got their money for gambling the easy way, (mommy and daddy). I on the other had had to work hard and long for that kind of money to PLAY with, so gambling with their money to win for 'them' was fun and easy, but when it came time to play with my money I became nervous about losing it. My intuition went right out the window and I lost it.

Not sure if that has anything to do with Karma, but I sure did learn a lesson.
