those usually aren't planted in pots though, but rather in a flower bed, in large quantities.

well i talked to my mom and i think she is right cause after i described what i saw to her she suggested impatiens. they are smaller than pansies and of course marigolds. i looked up sundrops and they are not them. then lilacs, then violets, then petunias. my only hunch is that they are indeed impatiens. i have been spending the last hour looking up various flowers on here and in my 1977 edition world book encyclopedia. i just love when the colors are proper like blue, orange, white, red, purple, orange, ect ect...

yep there were areas i never was in..

I've never seen impatians in blue, but as long as you water them they do spectacularly well in pots. Just about everything I garden is potted and the impatians are a pain about re-rooting themselves into other pots.

If you can find the neighbor again you might see if they'll pass along some cuttings.
