Let's face it...people get unjustly picked on every day...whether it's over gender, ethnicity, disability, creed, or sexual orientation... Have you laughed at a mean-spirited joke? Have you passed up a friend because they have a disability? Have you ever thought that you were "better" than someone? Then you just might be a bigot...(and let's not get into the technicalities of the definition of a bigot...you all know what I mean).

When you see this around you...do you protest or do you turn a blind eye? Be honest...

I protest it, but I'm still better than you.smokin

Well I don't want to point any fingers but, when people on this site were making fun of Susan Bolye for not being their idea of gorgeous, I protested what they were saying and some of you shot at me...hmmm?

I saw that thread I am glad that I kept away mainly because she is a fellow country person. She is a kind hearted person which got exploited for amusement of the others I better keep my mouth shut

The media exploits everyone, she just recieved the heavy hand because of the way she looked...but in all honesty she did kind of flop the last performance.

Yup, I am. It's not that I think it's right or that I mean to be but if I took a real honest look at myself I'd have to say yes. I think everyone has bias's and preconceptions and I think it's less bigoted to admit them and think about them than to deny them.

If someone told me to picture a doctor on the spot, most likely I'd picture a white guy or asian guy. If someone told me to picture a basketball player most likely a black guy would be my first thought. If I see a thugged out black dude I have certain preconceptions about their life, never mind the fact that I was friends with guys who dressed like that in college and who had never committed a crime in their lives, If I see a black guy in dressed business casual or in business attire I have a different preconception of him.

As a minority I've thought a lot about race and I see it through different eyes (more slanty ones...whoops just popped out). I notice that in american movies Jet Li and Jackie Chan can be ***-kicking heros but they don't get the sex scenes that white or black or latino ***-kicking heros get because asian males are not "sexy" to hollywood. I noticed in the Rock with Sean Connery, why are the loud mouths black people...(guy on the trolley and women in the alcatraz prison).

I've told and been the butt of racist jokes. I inwardly groan when I see a fat person walking towards my seat on the train because I know that when they sit next to me they'll be half in my seat forcing me to be squished in.

If I took the time to protest every unfair thing I saw I'd never do anything other than protest all day everywhere and get in constant fights. A lot of people say they're color blind and non prejudiced, it's the PC thing to do, but without talking about these issues progress will stop at a point where it's not okay to be blatantly racist but the subconscious bias' we develop growing up will continue to negatively impact our society.

Geek, this is very well put. It is so very important to talk in the forums about these kind of issues. It keeps this place open and realistic. I have noticed that our gay and lesbian friends can come in and flirt as do all of the rest of us, with out prejudice and bias, well at least by most people. This may sound gay, but it's so refreshing.....J/K:laughing:

Agreed, P2...I have girls flirting with me all the time...& I flirt back... It's all in good fun & I would never judge their lifestyle...

I also have an amputee friend on here that has told me he's treated like a pariah...just cuz he's a lil different. I have many disabled friends...I guess it's just what you're exposed to, huh?

everyone at some point in their life has been biased or a bit of a bigot. Profiling someone based on their appearence. Assuming you already what that person is like. Or laughing at a joke at someone else's expense.
I have a different sort of sense of humor. I wouldn't laugh or make fun of someone unless I can also make fun of myself. Because not one of us is perfect.
I do however see the need here on mingle for more tolerence of others. Gender, appearence, sexual orientation. If I wanted to be picky on who I wanted to speak to socially, I would pay to be a member of a country club.
I've always seen this site as all are welcome. Come as you are. I hope it stays that way.

Some people are more tolerant. There was a thread posted not long ago about how disgusting some fat was that was hanging over what the person in the picture was wearing. So, not all are tolerant. But, you're going to find that everywhere.

As much as I would love to say that I have treated everyone the same, treated everyone the way I want to be treated...I cannot say that.

I have been arrogant enough to think that I have been better than someone...and re-learned humility very quickly.
I have laughed at and told some jokes that I know where not nice...

yet, I do not enjoy people or enjoy being around people who hold prejudice against others based on a trait alone...like color/gender/nationality/religious belief/... I do not enjoy people or being around people who are arrogant and step on those they deem beneath them...

so, yes, there are times when I was a bigot...not something that I will put in my resume or cover letter for sure!

that is the most honest response out there and for that i commend you.

i have to admit the same. i've made mistakes in the past where i judge too quickly and now, i've learned from those mistakes.

and i think thats the most important part.

learning from the mistakes.

People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

So were different colours
And were different creeds
And different people
Have different needs
Its obvious you me
Though Ive done nothing wrong
Ive never even met you
So what could I have done
I cant understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
Help me understand
Help me understand

Now youre punching
And youre kicking
And youre shouting at me
And Im relying on your common decency
So far it hasnt surfaced
But Im sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fist (head to your fists)
I cant understand what makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

I cant understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
I cant understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
I cant understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
I cant understand (people are people)
What makes a man (why should it be)
Hate another man
Help me understand...

I don't know if just telling a racist joke means someone is a bigot. One year in college I rented a house with some of my friends, I was the token asian, there was a Haitian guy, a mexican, an italian/french guy (his parents were from those countries and he spoke french so I consider him European-american instead of just white, there was a white guy (who had black 1/2 siblings). There were lots of racist jokes flying around all the time, we were all comfortable with it.

I think sometimes it's more bigoted to not be able to get into such a comfort zone with people from other places that you can't just joke about it.

To the Susan Boyle thing, she is not attractive to me. If you find her ugly that is not a prejudiced statement, it's an opinion. If people are saying she's stupid because she's ugly and ugly people are stupid, that would be bigoted.
