Neighbors say Peabody firefighter harassed them
By Bruno Matarazzo Jr.
Staff Writer

PEABODY — Dana Schukert was looking for a fresh start after her 35-year-old husband, Walter, died of colon cancer in 2005.

Five months after his death, she and her son, now 7, moved from Salem to a home on Elmwood Circle, off Lynnfield Street.

But her hopes for a new beginning quickly crumbled after meeting her neighbor, Ernest Perrone, a city firefighter.

Police on Monday arrested Perrone, 60, of 14 Elmwood Circle, on assault and harassment charges after Schukert and other neighbors said Perrone terrorized them and their children with violent outbursts, and even his chain saw.

Neighbors told police he repeatedly took pictures of their children, made derogatory comments to a 28-year-old man and his boyfriend, and made lewd hand gestures to the gay couple — and children, as well.

Perrone pleaded not guilty to the charges of criminal harassment and two counts each of assault with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime. He was released on $2,500 bail, and his next court date is July 31. A message left at Perrone's home was not returned as of press time.

Fire Chief Steven Pasdon said he could not comment yesterday because he has not had a chance to review any of the information on the charges.

Schukert, reached last night by phone, said she hopes to have the situation resolved so she and her son can live in peace.

Neighbors began reporting the harassment to police last July after Schukert's son and other neighborhood kids playing with the sprinkler accidentally splashed water on Perrone's truck, according to court documents.

Perrone became angry and demanded the children dry the truck and threatened to "blow their (expletive) heads off" if they didn't, the police report said.

A day later, Perrone was seen taking pictures of Schukert's son and other neighborhood children playing on her driveway.

When other mothers in the neighborhood caught wind of this and demanded the pictures, Perrone said they could find them on child pornography Web sites, according to court documents.

Other neighbors were allegedly harassed because of their sexual orientation.

One neighbor reported to police in January that he was shoveling his driveway when Perrone began laughing at him and calling him derogatory names.

Perrone also made sexual gestures at neighborhood children, according to the allegations.

In April, a neighbor told police she watched as Perrone licked his glass door, wiped it with his sleeve and made several hand gestures at a young boy.

The assault charges stem from weekly occurrences by Perrone involving a chain saw in April.

A neighbor told police Perrone would run his chain saw up and down the fence and, when he caught the attention of Schukert, he'd raise the chain saw over his head and mouth the words: "I'm going to cut you both," according to court documents.

A neighbor saw what was going on and videotaped part of the incident, as well as other alleged instances of harassment.

Another reason I don't care if I own a home again or not. You cannot pick your neighbors and it's so much harder to sell and move out than just wait for a lease to end.

We ended up with one next door neighbor who had outfoor night parties, one who owned a hot air balloon that he loved to inflate in the wee hours, one whose kids loved to throw a ball at our fence and brick, and one child molester across the street. And that was a NICE neighborhood!!!! Not a shleppy one by any means. grumble

I grew up in the rural Iowa equivalent south central LA. lol Crooks beside us, crooks behind us, a55hole across the street. A block from a busy industrial road. I got shot when I 14 because a couple neighbors stole a big shots car took over state line a torched it. The neighbor boy besides got sent up because the other neighbor turned states evidence on him.

The uncle of the next door neighbor who got sent up was the neighborhood drunk. I was jogging one day and ran past his house when I heard a gun shot and felt my leg tense up and tingle like when you hit your funny bone. I looked back to see him go back in carrying a rifle. When I looked down at my leg there wasn't any blood, so I thought I had been shot by a pellet gun (not a novel occurrence). A neighborhood friends parents came out after they heard the noise and called the police and then my parents. That was a call, "Hi Mom. I got shot."

When police arrested him he said he thought I was the kid who had got his nephew sent up and he was trying to kill me for revenge. Luckily he was too drunk to aim and somehow I only got hit by one pellet from his 16 gauge shot gun.

Only one many crazy neighborhood stories.

wow Thomas that sucks.

I grew up in NYC, small area, not much happened there. One Father's Day weekend maybe 20 yrs ago. At a neighbor's house (still unsure what really happened) a man runs out stumbling and bleeding. He'd been stabbed multiple times. Imagine Father's day weekend, we are all outside with our kids and he runs past us (we all scatter and collect our kids) but he turns back and falls down right in front of my porch...

we have a registered sex offender across the street, the parents let their kid (little ones) roam and play in the streets and don't watch them...and the cops patrol this area a lot because the older kids do stupid things....and this is a decent neighborhood too
