Most of my friends here said,Ca is not in good shape as this moment. I also have friends in CA and they said it's not bad and there is a lot of work if you are NOT LAZY.

You guys from CA, what do you think? I will just move to a friends house and rent a room there. I have business degree but as of now I am working with old poeple.A caregiver of course with compassion.

Is it ok in Ca?

There is a sizable retiree community base here and always a shortage of quality licensed/qualified caregivers. Construction is one industry that took a bad beating! Real Estate as well. Health care is thriving as is entertainment. It is smart of you to plan carefully. It would help if you looked for work and sent your resume in and at least got your foot in the door of say Kaiser or Blue Cross. There are likewise plenty of smaller operations available as well. You just need to do a little internet homework. Depending on the organization you are seeking employment with you may be able to apply in Louisiana, got through the hire in process and training there and slide right into a job in California.

Word of warning, it is expensive living here in Los Angeles but not like NY. Public transit here leaves a lot to be desired, and the 405 freeway jams up between the hours of 6:30 to 9:00 AM and 2:30 to 8:00 PM. Beware the La Tijira offramp because that is the famous "South Bay Curve." Lots to do here at least. Also the beaches here are very different. Sunsets here at the beach are all that!

Thanks Andy!

My friend in CA that I am going to stay with has her own agency for Caregivers but I am not relying on that 100%. I am also doing my assignment online hoping to get some replies. Thanks anyway for other info especially on how the traffic goes in CA. I have my own vehicle so it would be easy for me to go look for job.I hope!

california, some cities have worse unemployment rate than others...not too sure how cali uemployment rate compares to louisiana...the unemployment crisis is real and be prepared for extreme competition..having said that, if you get a job, then cali's real comfortable...most people are casual/relaxed and friendly

I'll be moving in L.A. the unemployment rate here in
Louisiana is not bad. But living here is kind backwards.Plus I don't like hurricanes. They loved to visit this place. Not much oriental food too.

The unemployment rate in Cali is presently hovering around 9%, and can go as high as 13% depending on the city. Add to that the fact that the state is STILL trudging through a $24 billion budget snafu that is so far showing no signs of being closed up AS WELL AS the fact that state income taxes and sales tax are well above abnormally high as of right now. In fact, the state sales tax starts at about 9.25% and can go as high as 10.25% depending on the town.

And then there's THIS to keep in mind- labor unions (especially the SEIU and others) have been pushing REALLY hard to put their agendas through perspective employees. So expect to be hassled into "going union", which will probably result in your losing your job to cheaper means at some point. I know this is true as it has been going on in my line of work for the last couple of years now- practically every form of industry has left the state partially due to the fact they just don't wanna deal with the unions here.

So you're probably better off NOT moving to Cali, as the problems with things here will only get worse as time goes on. And this is coming from someone who's lived here almost all my life.

I think California is okay depending on what area your relocating to, just make sure you check out the area before you up and go, because the last thing you should wanna do is move down here and not have a job in business or caregiving. And if you don't want to go into business or caregiving; there is always Security lol, god knows that's not going anywhere.

I wish you the best my dear.

I am not exactly sure but these are the local community colleges and locations:

Santa Monica College:
Santa Monica CA.
Most reasonably priced unit for unit.
Good Support Services
More transfer oriented
PARKING AND TRAFFIC ARE A HEADACHE!

El Camino College:
Torrance CA
Decent School
More transfer oriented
Parking and traffic are not as bad.
Support is time consuming but they have decent support services.

East and West LA College (LA College)
Inglewood, Culver City respectively
Lots of trade programs
nothing spectacular
Support is ok.
Parking and traffic are not bad.

Harbor College
Harbor City/ San Pedro
More of a trade tech with some focus on transfer
parking is pretty dang good and traffic is not bad at all.
Decent school.

All of these schools have internet enrollment. You can look them up on the internet and CALL THEM AND ASK IF YOU DON'T SEE IT LISTED! they might be able to point you to the right school. My money is on Harbor College but I would not rule out the others. All schools are listed as Community Colleges. If you are looking for a higher degree then there is:

Long Beach College
CSU Long Beach
Long Beach CA

Cal State Dominguez
Dominguez CA (Carson)

UCLA in LA

and USC

Those are at least the state ones...

Santa Monica College would be the best to speak with first though. they have great councilors when I was going there at least!

You will be passing the Grand Canyon. Depending on the highway you take you could make a pass through Las Vegas and enter California by the I15. The rockies is the one big obstacle you got to hit. If you are coming into LA from the southern rout or eastern rout you should have rather smooth sailing but if you come from the north you will have to come up Frazier Pass. It is very steep. Once you get past Ft Tejon though it is smooth sailing. Word of note coming via the north, MIND YOUR MANNERS SPEED WISE IN KERN COUNTY! They are proud about making money off of speeders and boast that fact with a BIG sign.

Average viable speed limit in CA POSTED is 70 but you can squeeze 75 safely and 80 if you are feeling like pushing your luck a little. Any more you are begging for it! If you are driving a loaded moving truck just drive safely and keep your foot out of the peddle unnecessarily. Do not fuel up anywhere near Gorman A.K.A. Fraizer Pass. Fuel IN Frazer pass is respectable in price but near there it isn't.

There is a window you will want to use to drive into LA by to avoid massive traffic. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT REAL BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC IS ALL ABOUT!

ALL FREEWAY TRANSIT IS BEST BETWEEN THESE HOURS:
9:00 AM to 11:45AM, then the lunch rush, 1:00 PM to 2:45PM, then the after school rush which also applies to summer time. From about 6:30PM till about 5:00AM is usually quiet and traffic free, after that though is the morning rush and that one sucks the most!

The 405 is THE Major freeway of LA and in the morning going North is the pits, in the afternoon going South is the pits.

Major traffic hot spots: I10, downtown LA but anywhere else it is rather traffic free.

I405, La Tijerra Blvd, A.K.A. the South Bay Curve and Seal Beach Blvd, which is another slow zone.

The 110, I10, I5 interchange, always sucks!!!

The 110 north of the I10, AKA Arroyo Parkway, The off ramps are 10 to 15 MPH. They are relics from an age where cars didn't go over 40 mph. The off ramps on the Arroyo Parkway are TREACHEROUS!

The 710 is a main road right to Long Beach Harbor and has insane truck traffic on it at times.

The 605 in general is not too terrible but does get congested around the I10

We got public transit but it is not all that.

Hope this helps on your journey.drinker

All freeways crossing the I10 are slow at that point! Do not confuse the I10 which runs east/ west with the 110 which runs north south.

If you come into LA via the 91 it is a great drive actually and you do not have to cross over serious mountains.

as long as you're in a busier area, you'll be fine. if you are moving to a rural area.. then you may have to prepare yourself for commuting and traffic. BUT there's a great train setup out here and the bus system isn't bad if you're a tough cookie. :D

i love cali. love love love it.

but i know alot of people are fleeing right now.

First thing you are going to find out is that LA is one huge city. Funny thing is there is a shipwreck in Palos Verdes. We also have MILES of beaches. There are five harbors, 3 major air ports, mountains near by that get snow in winter, canyon country, several botanical gardens, I know of three, over a dozen different museums not counting art, four locations that have spectacular views of the city, tide pools, a butt load of historical landmarks that really are kind of disappointing in reality like Hollywood and Vine, a full blown garment district, swap meets galore, at least six major malls, three major amusement parks, and a thriving entertainment industry.

There is plenty to do and see. There is no place like Los Angeles any where else.

Sunset at the beach is all that. Sex on the beach (the drink) is all that. Now sex on the beach, well, it would get you in trouble not to mention the sand is not that fun either. It will get everywhere you do not want it!

Now this is a big challenge...I am here in Los Angeles, I am familiar of some of the places here.I love it here, all I want is the work...huhuhu! I have part time, I watch this old woman that is sick. It's only 2 days.

Whew! I wish I could get a live in work...as caregiver...
