GOP congressman supports ‘proud right-wing terrorist’

House Rep from northern California says public health option a ‘threat to democracy’

US House Representative Wally Herger, of California’s 2nd congressional district, expressed “enthusiastic approval” of a town-hall attendee who described himself as a “proud right-wing terrorist,” newspapers in northern California report.

According to the Redding Record Searchlight, an incident broke out at a town hall at Simpson University in Redding on Tuesday when Herger signaled encouragement to a 67-year-old town hall attendee, Bert Stead, who called himself a “proud right-wing terrorist.”

“Amen, God bless you,” Herger reportedly replied to the comment. “There is a great American.”

That was enough for 50-year-old Marisa Hewitt, who called the largely anti-health reform crowd “a bunch of racist haters” and started “using the f-bomb” after the controversial comments.

That did not sit well with crowd. One individual grabbed Hewitt by the arm and ejected her from the hall with the words “you’re outta here.”

Herger also told the crowd that the health care reform legislation currently before Congress is a “threat” to American democracy.

“Our democracy has never been threatened as much as it is today,” the Mount Shasta Area Newspapers quoted Herger as saying.

The comment evidently was received with “a loud standing ovation.”

Herger, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1986, has been sending out fliers in which he states that the health reform bill will create “havoc” in the US health care system.

There's plenty of wackos out there...left, right, upside down, whatever. If you, as a politician, aren't smart enough to back away from the word 'terrorist' in the self proclaimed description of one of your 'supporters', you deserve the backlash that comes your way.

The white house has been framing conservative opposition to it's agenda as extremist. Nanci Pelosi referred to the same as Nazis. There have been multiple "reports" about rightwing militia groups since Il Imperator took office.

The people at the town hall are simply taking the rhetoric and hate-mongering speech spewed by Pelosi, Frank and the rest and spitting it back in their faces.

If this man is a rightwing terrorist, then so am I and so were Washington, Franklin, Adams, Hancock and Jefferson.

The people at the town hall are simply taking the rhetoric and hate-mongering speech spewed by Pelosi, Frank and the rest and spitting it back in their faces.

If this man is a rightwing terrorist, then so am I and so were Washington, Franklin, Adams, Hancock and Jefferson.


I wasn't there and don't know the context. The suspect the man likely was making a point. But as a politician I think it's still important to communicate that either you understand he is joking (or think he's joking), or note that terrorism really isn't the best approach to a solution. He let it hang there and I think it shows poor judgement on his part. The word 'terrorist' is pretty loaded.

I've not heard the phrase 'right wing terrorist' before. But I'll give you Pelosi. I don't think most dems like her either.

fair enough. it is a divisive word. I suspect that's why anyone standing up to oppose ObamaCare is quick to be painted by the left with the scarlet letters "racist" and "nazi"

Herger may well have been behooved to acknowledge what the man was refering to but to note that he shouldn't have to feel like a terrorist in his own home just for standing up for his liberties.

Pelosi did not call anyone a Nazi, for heaven sakes look up with she actually said instead of helping Fox Rush and Beck twist what she actually said.

This is what she said:

"I think they’re Astroturf… You be the judge. "They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare."

I saw swastikas at two of the town halls, the one below I had not seen.

I am a liberal and I would never have even thought to call someone against his health care a racist or a Nazi. Maybe ill informed or gullible or just plain bad listeners but not a racist or a Nazi.

You do come up with some good excuses for the guy supposedly just standing up for his liberties.

I know many Democrats. Not one of them has ever referred to anybody that was against the health care plan as a racist or a Nazi.

I tend to lean left (or so I thought) and I am completely against his health care stance. And I don't consider myself any of those things. It's ok to be a democrat and opposed to some democrat initiatives. And I think this is a bad one.
