Did you all know they are different?

Pathological liar - A pathological liar is usually defined as someone who lies incessantly to get their way and does so with little concern for others. Pathological lying is often viewed as coping mechanism developed in early childhood and it is often associated with some other type of mental health disorder. A pathological liar is often goal-oriented (i.e., lying is focused - it is done to get one's way). Pathological liars have little regard or respect for the rights and feelings of others. A pathological liar often comes across as being manipulative, cunning and self-centered.

Compulsive liar - A compulsive liar is defined as someone who lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative and cunning (see, Pathological Liar), rather they simply lie out of habit - an automatic response which is hard to break and one that takes its toll on a relationship.

I've read there are good and bad ways to cope with liars. How do you cope with liars?

Good answer. Me neither... But what if you find yourself in a relationship with one and you've only figured it out after the fact? How would you confront? Or would you discuss rather than confront?

If I cared about them I would discuss... If it was a very new relationship, I'd discuss carefully, watch how things went for a little bit and if it didn't change I'd leave... Either personality probably won't change, it's very hard to do.. If they can that's great but if they can't, well it would be very hard to be in a relationship with someone that lied no matter what the lying diagnosis was...

My Dad has a friend that constantly lies. It's like a mental illness. He talks about how he dated a movie star last week, etc.
Everybody knows that he didn't. He's been that way all of his life.

My child has a neighbor friend. This child lives in a bad home. The child has lived a traumatic life. If my child says that they went to Disney World, the other child did too. But...the other child never did. We just accept the child and their background. The child has been doing it since they were little.

I would tell them they have a piece of something stuck between their teeth, that they need to find a mirror, and then disappear into the night. That would be of the "small white lie" variety I believe.

How do you cope with liars?

Off with their heads.

Seriously, that's the one major thing you do NOT want to do with me. You get one chance. You screw it up, you're done.
