I should start this post by saying I personally have Asperger's Syndrome, which is high-functioning Autism. My question is, in your opinion, is Autism a help (makes you smarter, able to see the best in people, more aware of surroundings), or a hindrance (take things at face value, slight Obsessive-Compulsive type traits, decreased attention span)?

I work in the medical field and have experienced a few people with autism and a couple with Asperger's. I find them to be highly intelligent people most especially those with Asperger's. Those with autism are more difficult to deal with because they aren't always capable of controlling their emotions and at times their tempers and sadly they do not know how to express their intelligence. They tend to be treated as someone who is retarded because people do not understand. One mother of an older autistic child that is a patient of mine is almost to the point of a nervous breakdown because he pretty much is out of control and she doesn't know how to handle him. It's pretty sad either way. So I do believe it is much better to have Asperger's than autism. There is a new movie I saw advertise at the movies the other day about a guy that has Asperger's called "Adam".

i think we are all different in our own ways and all have struggles so no i do not think it is nessecarily a curse or blessing really, i think it is neither here nor there.. i guess take it for what it is worth and make the most of it.

A friend of my daughter has Asperger's and he is the most intelligent young man I have ever met. At 10, he was taking Japanese because English was boring him. He had a memory that most adults wouldn't believe possible. He could memorize movies and plays after the first time he sees them.

The only thing is that he doesn't make eye contact or like to be touched.

I also know children that have autism that don't come outside of their shells and can't or don't interact with others.

my 7 yr old son has Aspergers. was reading at 3 1/2 and does math like rainman, besides a few quirks, hes just fine and doing well in 2nd grade, but i do see him being bored with school. the work is way too easy and they already put him in an enrichment program. I look at it as a blessing. for me i was scared to death of having a so called special needs child. it has taught me much patience and not to be so judgemental of othersdrinker

good luck bro

my son is high functioning autism---it's both a gift and a curse---he's smart, trusting, and innocent, --the lack of social skills is a deffinate problem- easily taken advantage of and talked into things. but i wouldn't change anything about him--he'll eventually learn the things he needs to, and in the meantime he teaches people about patience, understanding, and acceptance. he's 13 and doing his best.
