The bill was not rejected. They had a vote on whether to pass the bill
without further debate. That is what failed, not the bill. Actually it
has passed every major effort to change the bill and is very much alive.
The Republicans are still wanting to debate it and change it.
Mostly I think they are trying to stall, but so far it looks like it
will pass. I have been following every vote on it, and so far it remains
intact. Except they agreed to release the names of people who have been
rejected green cards to the FBI, so they can track them down and deport
them.
Other than that the bill is alive and doing very well.

Supporters could muster only 45 votes to limit debate and speed the bill
to final passage, 15 short of what was needed on the procedural
maneuver. Fifty senators voted against cutting off debate.

Most Republicans voted to block Democrats' efforts to advance the
measure

How are you today?
I understand your believes and stance on this issue. Mine are similar
and compromise was a very hard concept for me on this bill. However,
killing or stalling this bill is feeding into the hands of those that
want full amnesty, and work behind the scenes to conspire stalling any
positive solution to the problem.
For every year this legislation is prolonged hundreds of thousands of
illegal immigrant's children reach the age to vote. Since they were born
here they have the right and which side of this issue will they stand.
Do you think they will vote for tougher measures? I dont and this was
instrumental in my choice to support this bill. It did not give full
amnesty, but a chance for illegals to pursue the American Dream. It was
not going to be free, or easy.
If it is stalled until elections, or after elections then hundreds upon
hundreds of illegal immigrants children will be voters. You think that
killing this bill is some great victory, but in reality it is a
fantastic defeat for us that will make the next fight even harder.
Basically it will condemn us to open borders and the America we know and
love.

A few days ago I was asked to examine the bill and comment on its
international implications. I have got to say that the damn thing is
virtually incomprehensible to me. Besides being massive, it has all
kinds of twists and turns in it, trying to iron out the philosophic
inconsistencies that infused its creation.

For what it is worth, I have recommend a redo. You are right, there is
big time pressure to pass this but it is a mess. My contacts say, when I
point this out, that they know it, and they will 'patch' its defects
later.

In fairness, some of its key backers are genuine people who are trying
to improve things for immigrants, but in addition to the messiness of
the bill it has also been larded with special-interest provisions. The
well-intentioned folks know this, of course, and all they can do is
shrug and say that the core ideas of the bill are worth achieving
despite the special interest aspects.

I think from my postings last night that you all know where I stand on
immigration and immigrants, and I know that my PoV (point of view) is
quite different from those of many of you my friends here. This is a
toughy, and I understand the concerns that you have. Maybe when the bill
is done with, up or down, we could discuss the issues that you see with
my PoV -- I'd like to engage in a deeper discussion of this, and test
out with your help how I came to it, and what relationship it may have
your your own ideas.....

much a part of history in this country...I dont like inferences by some
that this may be some kind of race issue or discrimination or
something..it is not..just a matter of the numbers...to that end I

I also realize that the bill is still alive..BUT..I think we can claim a
partial victory in the fact that it is having a difficult time moving
thru the various votes & committees etc...still gives us time to express

I have no answers to this...but I think just looking at the numbers
clearly defines the problem...so something needs to be done.

Unfortunately they must be using salt water, because the people on the
other side want the irrigation to stop more than we do. This subject is
something that can not be explained easily. I will just say that
American companies have used NAFTA for their own agendas. Cheap labor
and inhumane work enviornments. Their grass may be brown, but they are
not stupid. They can see what is happenning, and what is forced upon
them is not a good thing. It only benefits one enity, big business.
What needs to happen is a change in the Gov. on the other side to one
that will water their grass. This will never happen as long as the ones
who are abused see it is easier to cross the fence and walk barefoot
through the green grass on the other side.

when people are opressed dieing starveing no shelter no dignity, they
will try if they can to escape those indignities.when all the wealthy
nations pitch in and rectify the inequities on this planet people will
be content were they are.
