How would you consider someone an alcoholic? Is it by how often they drink, how much, or how it effects their lives? How much is too much when considering a potential date?

I think that if you have to wonder if someone is an alcoholic, then they probably aren't dating material. That's just my opinion, though.

some say you don't have to drink an alcholic beverage to be an alcholic - I don't subscribe to that theory though - I think you have to consider all the points you made...if the person can do other things that don't involve drinking then perhaps that person isn't an alcholic???

i had a old bf that is a alcoholic after 20yrs im suprised he doesnt have liver cancer.. he has a great heart. but i just cant and wont deal with anyone anymore that has a drinking issue.

if someone thinks that if the drink is offered to them, they have to drink it... drinking early in morning for breakfast is a sign of a big problem

a friend of mine lived with a alcoholic for 7yrs and after they split up he was drinking more than he was eating, he couldnt take care of himself he had someone stay with him, and the ambulance were called at first they wernt going to take him, untill they saw him, he so skin and bones he died a few days later

i have a uncle that was alcoholic, it started when his twin died and it got worse when grandma died 26yrs ago.
he finally got help and met a lady that has been by his side and hes been sober and clean for 22yrs..

he had a son that was only 28yrs old that died from alcohol poisioning he left 3 kids behind and a gf

Just because someone drinks a lot, it does not automatically mean that they are an alchoholic. It is more about how much the person allows drink to control their daily life, and how much the person needs to have a drink.

well the old bf thought that if someone offered him the drink he had to drink it.which he didnt he could had said no thank you. but that wasent him.. he made such a fool out of himself

there was one time we had a gathering and i bought a bottle which should had lasted over a week. but guess what between him and his buddy that bottle lasted not even a hour and he accused me for drinking it when i never touched it.. he was so plowed that he fell in the closet and ran into his gutar(mispelled it) i took off and i called his sister to come and get him for i didnt want him in the house

I think alcoholics are officially those who go to meetings, otherwise they are drunks,,,

For me though,, anyone who drinks for the purpose of getting drunk on any regular basis(more than twice a month) is too much of a drinker for me and has a problem

there is all levels of alcoholism. I've known some that only drank on weekends and some that drink everyday and still funtion well. When I was younger...well MUCH younger, I drank a LOT but did not and still don't think I was an alcoholic. I stop drinking in 1973 and never looked back...
