My neighbor never complained about my smoking in my apartment before now!! She says the smoke from my cigs goes through her vents!! Can that happen?? I've never heard of that. I always thought the vents for apartments were separate!! Are they connected to each other?what

Who cares? There are no laws to stop you smoking in your own home.

I complained about a neighbor smoking once. But, he threw his cigarette butts all over the ground in front of my patio. There were so many all over the place and it was disgusting.

If it's a small house or building, then most likely yes. if you live in a small house, it may not even be going through the vents, probably under the door or window cracks.

I used to live in a huge building and the guy on the other side of me smoked cigars constantly. It was a new building and we were the only two on the floor at the time. He was 5 apartments down. I could smell it.

Depends if you are a renter or owner.

If you all share the same "forced air heat source" than yes air form your apt.is mixed with all others. It is a management thing, you have done it since you moved in, with no complaints? Guess she can always move.

Not sure about the vent systems. But is your apartment lease for smoke free?If it is ,yes you'll have to go outside.Or on your balcony if you have one.

Have you spoken to the leasing office about it? See what they say, since you've smoked since you've lived there and have never had a problem. There's nothing in your lease about not smoking in your apartment, right?

You can't understand why she is complaining??? Look I smoke when I go out with friends and have a few drinks, so know what my clothes and everything smell like just after a night out. I don't allow smoking in my house. I'm all for smokers rights BUT to say you don't understand and her kids might have a cold...that's being ignorant.

Express opinons, don't call names.
Lady was just asking for thoughts, NOT judgement.

There is no stipulation in my lease, when I moved in, the landlord said smoking inside is ok!! I was fine with no complaints til now!!

I smell more than smoke in this, but rather a rat (The notorious must find something to complain about neighbor).
You pay for your unit and been there before her, this is up to your landlord to rectify and not for you to stand out side in the cold.

A or a few well placed small fans could easily do the trick, or if it really concerns you get a smokeless ashtray that. Cheers

Your landlord should be able to make your neighbor aware that it's ok for you to smoke in your apartment.

Great, your in your rights then as a renter...If you still get harrassed talk to your landlord. Not the other tenant.Good Luck.

Also if nothing is stated in lease that you can or can not smoke .Your landlord needs to update his leases,in writing.
It is only for your own protection.Verbal is just he said, she said, sorry.

If nothing more for right now till your contract is up, have your landlord sign something and date it, for you to keep in file.

Look, you pay the rent. You get to smoke. If she doesn't like, she can move.
