Massive 8.8 quake hits Chile, sets off tsunami

SANTIAGO, Chile - A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, killing at least 78 people, collapsing buildings and setting off a tsunami.

A huge wave reached a populated area in the Robinson Crusoe Islands, 410 miles (660 kilometers) off the Chilean coast, said President Michele Bachelet.

Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

A similar quake in 1960 devastated Hawaii.

VERY SERIOUS SITUATION.

A large tsunami is expected in Hawaii, particularly Hilo,
from the main quake and aftershocks.

This is around 700 to 800 times stronger than the quake that
destroyed large parts of Haiti.

The previous 1960 similar quake generated a 37 ft tsunami which
severely damaged Hilo.

There are civil defense instructions in the front pages of the
phone books in Hawaii where there are tsunami warning maps and
instructions.

Here is a link to a usgs report on the 1960 event.

Also at risk are Japan, Australia and other Pacific rim locations.

My Sister lives in Hilo. I just got off the phone with her and they are flashing warnings that the Tsunami Alarms will be sounding at 6:00 am local Hawaii time. The first wave is expected to hit at 11:19 local Hawaii time.

She also works at the Hilo Hospital and is expecting to get a call to report.

I spent a lot of time in Hilo and Big Island and have visited the Tsunami Museum in Hilo. That place was Devastated back in 1960!!

I hope this is not a repeat event. Hawaii is so beautiful....hate to see it happen again.

Hope it turns out to be much smaller than 1960.
I have also been to Hilo a few times and have
been to the museum.

Better safe than sorry. Glad to hear that they will
at least have the morning to prepare.

also if it happened in 1960 scientist may want to check and see if this may happen every 50 years or so,so the people in chile can be prepared

SANTIAGO, Chile - A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.

Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma said the most powerful quake to hit the country in a half-century killed at least 82 people, but the death toll was rising quickly.

President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe". Buildings were damaged in the capital Santiago, more than 200 miles away from its epicenter.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET).

Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist with the USGS told NBC News that the quake released 500 times more energy than the than the one that hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12. The quake was felt in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is located more than 800 miles away.

At least 23 aftershocks were reported, including one registering at 6.9 on the Richter scale.

I am waiting for Pat Robertson to blame Saten.

They [Haitians] were under the heel of the French. . . . And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said ‘We will serve you if you will get us free from the prince.' True story. And so the Devil said, ‘OK it's a deal.' And they kicked the French out. . . . But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after another."

My sister was living right on the ocean in Hilo! She moved inland a couple months ago but they are right on the edge of the evacuation zone!

Wait no longer, the low life religious scumbag has already said Chile deserved it....egads.

"Robertson Claims “God Even Angrier with Chile than Haiti”

"Citing what he described as the “the persecution of a great hero who rid their land of Godless communists” as a possible cause, prominent TV evangelist and amateur seismologist Pat Robertson today argued that the 8.8 magnitude of the earthquake that struck Chile early this morning should serve as a warning to the population that “God is even angrier with them than he is with the people of Haiti.”

“If I had to guess, I’d say it must have to do with Chile’s persecution and attempted prosecution of their great former leader, and a personal hero of mine, Augusto Pinochet – who, it should be noted, had never been convicted of a crime when the Lord called him home three years ago.” The popular host of ‘The 700 Club’ and longtime bingo circuit icon also added, “General Pinochet not only assisted the CIA in the overthrow of Chile’s Marxist government, but is widely credited with personally arranging the meetings of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of his countrymen with Jesus.”

General Pinochet, who spent the last eight years of his life fighting prosecution on human rights and other charges before succumbing to congestive heart failure in December 2006, could not be reached for comment, even by Robertson. The General–turned-Dictator has long been considered a transformative figure in the field of Crimes Against Humanity as a result of his landmark policy of ‘Forced Disappearance’, and was even honored in 1998 with the first-ever arrest warrant for a former head of state under the principle of ‘universal jurisdiction’ by Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon, who is currently investigating former Bush Administration officials for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity.

For his part, Robertson, who reportedly lobbied then-President George W. Bush on behalf of former Liberian Dictator and accused Human Rights criminal Charles Taylor in exchange for lucrative gold mining contracts, says that he is “praying that the people of Chile will heed this warning, and never again blaspheme against God and international free-market commerce by nationalizing their most precious natural resources.”
