Wikileaks has obtained and decrypted this previously unreleased video footage from a US Apache helicopter in 2007. It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache shoots and kills them in a public square in Eastern Baghdad. They are apparently assumed to be insurgents. After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan arrives on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded. They are fired upon as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths ocurred.

When a nonprofit group this week released video footage, leaked via a source in the Pentagon, showing a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack on a group of civilians in Baghdad, the clip unleashed a viral online sensation and ignited an intense debate about the conduct of U.S. forces in Iraq.

But the simple fact of the video's release also reflects the ongoing revolution in how news gets produced and published.

The group, called WikiLeaks, released the Pentagon video on Monday. Less than 24 hours later, the clip had netted more than 1.3 million viewers on YouTube alone.

The transmission of information, in and out of regularly authorized channels, has become much more immediate — and far more viral — than at any point in history. Virtually anyone with a browser and a DSL connection can now bring news to light in dramatic and instantaneous fashion. All these trends converged with the WikiLeaks video.

Seven noncombatants were killed in the Baghdad attack — among them a driver (Saeed Chmagh) and photographer (Namir Noor-Eldeen) employed by the Reuters news service. Reuters, indeed, had been seeking to obtain internal Pentagon materials pertaining to the attack — including the footage that went online yesterday — for the past three years, using the Freedom of Information Act. The agency's efforts had so far proved fruitless.

And that's where WikiLeaks came in. The nonprofit website launched in 2006 as an online clearinghouse for whistleblowers seeking to publicize leaked government documents across the world. But prior to posting the video footage, the site had functioned as repository of information; with this latest scoop, which it says came from "a courageous source" within the U.S. military, it has morphed into an investigative news source in its own right. (The full 18-minute video can be viewed — albeit with the clear warning that the material is quite disturbing — at the special project URL that WikiLeaks established for it, under the incendiary name of collateralmurder.com.)

so you shouldn't cry when american soldier get attacked ya? Iraqis are merely defending their country that is their right. US forces are just as much terrorists as the ones you profess to be.

Guys stick to your complaints of war itself, not the actions that take place during it.

War is hell, and most people cannot even comprehend the actions that must be taken on a daily bases over there. This especially goes for people hating the thought of shooting first and asking questions later. The battlefield is no place for public opinion, or even witness.

War itself should never be fought unless absolutely necessary. So preach to stop the war. It's unconstitutional in itself, merely a representation of the expansion of our empire. That is wrong. War is wrong. The actions people take during it are irrelevant, and for soldiers' eyes and ears only. To pick them apart and question them is to be hypocritical.

There is a big defference between an American Soldier and a Muslim terrorist who use women and children as human shields, strap homicide bombs on children and women who openly brag about strapping a bomb on for the cause.

I also do feel bad when one of our defenders of freedom are attacked, but then I think how his fellow soldiers are going to bring on the hurt to the terrorist and it give me some relief.

War is not wrong, and it is not illegal. September 11th that was illegal, Saddam's crimes against humanity well that was illegal too. We did what we had to do plain and simple.

As the video shows the soldiers in the Apache did not take a single step including killing those unarmed men who tried to rescue the wounded without first receiving formal permission from their superiors. This is why civilians die and I agree totaly with you Drivenmenuts war is hell and should only be faught as a last resort not a first option. When Pelozi said she wouldnt prosecute Bush/Cheney for war crimes I knew she was as bad as them and nothing would change. Im verry certain its all about the oil.

Actually they were fired on first, and the rules of engagement were followed, not to mention that the website the reported the story is now under fire for not reporting the whole story and misleading.

I Know it sounds drastic, but i don't think it's our business as civilians what happens on the battlefield.

After a while of fighting, killing someone that's unarmed isn't much different than someone pulling the wings off a fly. It's harsh, but true. Perspectives get changed, good people do horrible things. Frankly Bush and Cheney weren't the only war criminals that needed to be presecuted. They really weren't any different than any leader we had since Korea. We have not actually faught a "war" since WW2. Leave our soldiers out of the debate. The aristocrats are to blame.
