The President is the head of the executive branch and plays a large role in making America’s laws. His job is to approve the laws that Congress creates. When the Senate and the House approve a bill, they send it to the President. If he agrees with the law, he signs it and the law goes into effect.

If the President does not like a bill, he can refuse to sign it. When he does this, it is called a veto. If the President vetoes a bill, it will most likely never become a law. Congress can override a veto, but to do so two-thirds of the Members of Congress must vote against the President.

Despite all of his power, the President cannot write bills. He can propose a bill, but a member of Congress must submit it for him.

This would be nice required reading for all registered voters,, to understand the true context of any presidential 'promise'

he/she can suggest policy or law and he/she can approve it(SIGN) or deny it(VETO),, but he cant MAKE anything happen (outside of war)

a 'promise' from a presidential candidate is tantamount to a commitment to propose something to or approve something from CONGRESS,,,but the president cant possibly PROMISE what CONGRESS will or wont do

The President can't technically author a bill, but there are members in both houses that will author one for him(which has been done) and write it word for word with what he says.

quite possibly , but they would still have the same process of getting other MEMBERS to agree and pass the bill on,,,

no new taxes... remember that one? every prez says what we wanna hear, it's his (or hers) job to get elected, no matter what. obama is an elegant statesman, has great speech writers, and is very intelligent. but no prez can keep the promises they make, because they never have any intention of keeping them. obama is gonna be busy cleaning up bushes mess for a while, so even if he wanted to keep any of the pre elect promises that he made, he won't be able to.grumble drinker

Yeah , i dont agree with repealing dont ask dont tell, or granting amnesty to illegal immigrants but overall, he is supporting things that I think to be logical and progressive

i wouldnt grade him at 100%., but certainly in the high 80 or low 90 percent range

Weed will never be legal, this country is entirely too stubborn at this point to accept the new information that has been presented. Actually, then they would have to admit they lied to us...they can't do that.

Minimum wage has risen, even thought not nearly up to nine dollars, but with the economy the way that it is I don't think that will happen with this President.

note also that the price increases due to stimuluses and shortages, and benefits the minimum wage increase could have had are destroyed.

State laws are far different than federal laws. The President has effectively done nothing as far legalizing marijuana, individual states have.

your right, in fact, i read an article where a woman was fired because she tested positive for thc, and had a prescription for it. she took them to court and she lost, because it's still a federal law.

which goes back to another point I made about the limited scope of the presidents authority, he can propose the idea but after that, congress must pass the bill for him to approve or veto

the president is not going to legalize marijuana of course, unless congress passes a bill to do so

but many states have

Hmmmmmm Holding public hearings and including everything on CSPAN? No... Hmmmmmm Posting complete bill on the internet for 5 days before signing them into law? No... Hmmmmmm. I can keep going if you would like.
