Part of the cost depends on where you live. Jeeps also spec out performance tires with the assumption you are going to torture you tires. $30 tires do not exist for Jeeps especially if you have a real "Off road equipped" jeep unlike the City Slicker Knock Offs.

Performance costs. Be glad you don't own something like a high end BMW calling out for $250 + a piece tires.

It often pays to watch Craigslist and Ebay for slightly used tires. Last winter I bought a set of aluminum wheels and tires for my Jeep (pic) for $350. ;)

Granted they were only 15s or 16s.

The most inexpensive tires I could find for my car were $210 each... 18" wheels and ridiculous amounts of horsepower makes everything on the car expensive... couple that with living in one of the most expensive areas in the country and even minor maintenance is a financial disaster.

I've paid that and more for all my tires since driving a Jeep, then a MazdaRX8, and now my Beamer. I had some major awesome tires on my Cherokee Sport before.

A lot of it is the size, but also high or low profile tires are more costly

I have top of the line Blizzaks for winter, but bought Hancook Ventus low profile on the Beamer for summer.

They kick azz. LOVE THEM. I LOVE good tires and shop/research a lot. It's fun to read what the guys put on their cars they have on the track.

Woot!

^^ if you notice the tread, it's in v-shape center for anti-hydroplaning which low profile cars do a lot =) They are sticky so take corners awesome.love love love

I got my Ventus for my BMW for just around $100 a piece. Absolute best deal and reviews over the Michelin PS2's consistently.

Reviewed high on the track too. A lot of drivers are looking at the Hancooks. Guess they are pretty new to the states, from what my tire guys tell me.

And to that I say .. BRING IT! smitten

There is a problem with that logic...

Radial tires get a memory and if you reverse the direction of rotation on them there is a strong chance of catastrophic failure. Tires from the left side of the vehicle need to stay on the right side of the vehicle.

Also 50% of the time they are stolen anyways.

Andy, that was true years ago, when radials first came out.

Better rubber compounds & improved technology, not true anymore.

Consult a good tire person, most likely have to go to a heavy duty
commercial sales person, to find someone that really knows what they are talking about.

I'm aware, which is why I took the tires off the donor car and onto mine myself. ;)

But, I don't really put too much stock in that theory.

To a point that is true, but a lot of tires are designed to go in only one direction. Many tires, especially 'mudding' and some performance tires have tread that are made to displace rain and crap in a certain direction, so are marked with an arrow.

Right. And it's also usually fairly obvious based on the tread pattern.

If you have 4wd tires are more expensive too.. I have an 05 Honda CRV and last yr on my cross country trip, had to get all 4 new tires because some guy lost an aluminum ladder in my lane and I caught the corner of it... punched a hole in my tire..not fixable.. the tires were worn( I was going to get new ones when I got back)so had to replace all 4.. Toyo tires, cost me over $700.00...
