Topic: iPad or ... ???

... When thinking netbooks, laptops???

I just can't go back to windows, now that I've gone iMac as my desktop ...

The extra money spent was SO worth it; I'll never be able to go back to a snail's pace, slow cleaning, slow loading, virus/trojans/malware/spyware, blah times 3, etc ...

I've read lotsa reviews on iPad, so somewhat aware of its positives and negatives ...

I know I should firstly let the new one cut this Fall, for sure ...

Would love some firsthand experience feedback and/or hardcore techies to weigh in ...

OF COURSE, I'd get an Apple laptop in a heartbeat, but I can scarcely consider an iPad financially ...

I just need something to surf the web when I can't be at desk, etc. ...

NB: I don't even have a smart phone or mp player ... Have never had a laptop ...

I'll be very easy to please ...

My daughter has a 16 Gb itouch and LOVES it; I think the small screen would drive me nutso!!!

Pros vs Cons ... Opinions???

If you really just want something to play around on the web with then the iPad is great. The owner of my company is a die hard Mac guy loves it for checking his email on the go.

I would get one but it's so unnecessary as I have an iMac sitting at home on my desk as well as a PC laptop, a blackberry and an iTouch. blushing

The cost of the monthly wireless plan is also something to consider, unless you only plan on using it where wifi is available.

Yes ... I've wireless provided in my building, as well as on my Comcast router ...

THAT piece is part of the biggest rub for me ... But w/ the financial constraints towards purchasing a full Apple laptop, I think I could put up w/ that limitation ...

Also ... My (college) towne has wifi EVERYWHERE! I'm not on the road much, home is my office ...

The reason we haven't smart phones is also financial ...

We've 2 great desktops, quiet lives, daughter only 12 and a quite affordable olde Sprint plan w/ me already carrying 4 phones on it w/ email, photos and minimal web surfing ... (all for around$110 mo!)

Does he type from it much? I understand that to be one of the downsides ... not real comfy and kinda slow, uh???

I too am a mac user, iTouch, iPhone, iMac, Macbook.... yada yada... love 'em for all the same reasons you do....

my personl opinion on the iPad:

Pro's
1. mucho cool factor
2. run fast
3. looks great
4. it's like a "big iPhone"....
5. apps load easy, many available, beautiful to look at, comfortable to hold... ect...
6. everything you would expect from the iPhone, in a larger and equally elegant form factor...

Con - why havent I bought one yet?/
1. the main reason, i am more comfortable with my Macbook on the couch, I mean, it's just not comfortable for me to hold for a long period of time
2. WiFi connection issues - yes, they happen... yes it is frustrating, unless you get the 3G version (which can connect to Cellular)... it's akin to the "iTouch, iPhone" argument... I mean, who wants a mobile device that is not connected all the time?
3. the fact that you can buy a dell "Netbook" and load OSX on it - gives you the best of all worlds, light form factor, comfortable to use, and runs OSX...

Hope my opinions gave you some new angles to consider!

THANX ... That is such great info ... good help!

Would ya mind expanding a bit on the OSX into a Dell laptop suggestion, please???

Never heard of it ... But, consider the source ...

I'm a cottage industry Natural Medicine Doc, NOT at all techie ... TOTAL Dweebtard there., obviously...

That sounds quite affordable ... Is this the new common???

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Im thinking about buying one also and making the leap from Windows to Mac. The kicker for me has been Vista. Im truly fed up! My kids have been Mac for a few years and love it! My concerns are this, I beta-test video games and Im not sure they would be compatable. Also I use Skype constantly and the thought of a sleek puter like I-pad haveing to use clunky external cam/mic just strikes me as Meh! spock

The iPad isn't a full computer, it's more like a giant iPod.

Almost all Mac products (iphone, imac, ipad, macbooks) have built in cams and mics for skyping.

I dunno, I have an iPhone and have used a Mac before. I'm not a rabid Mac fanboy that buys everything with the Apple logo on it like some people do. Now the iPad is cool and all, but I can do just about all of that on my iPhone. Plus, as a guy, where the hell am I supposed to carry that thing? At least girls have those giganto purses they can stick it in.

PC's get slow because of the user, they don't know how to upkeep it and let it get chock full of spyware which slows it down. The Macs aren't any faster than my PC (they both use Intel processors) and they are not virus proof like some people seem to think. If they were then there wouldn't be any anti-virus programs that run on Mac now would there? It's just not worth a hackers time to try and create a virus for a Mac, all government / financial / big money type customers use PC's which is why you see so many viruses written for PC's.

If you don't have an iPhone and really want one and will use apps / capabilities, then go for it. Otherwise it seems to be somewhat of a waste of money.

The I-Pad doesnt have built in cam/mic. My biggest concern is game compatibility. I can keep this laptop to use for Skype if need be.

Well you can't game on an iPad, it's not an actual computer.

and I'm shocked it doesn't have a cam when they put one in EVERYTHING else lol.
