Limewire is not the culprit. this flavor had all of the adware and other BS stripped out of it. it is just like the Pro version without the $20 to get the pro version.

If you get a virus you didn't scan your incoming files and no Anti Virus automatically scans downloads.

You want software fraught with viruses and adware as well as trojans and rootkits?

FACEBOOK!

So there!

Yar Har!

Limewire is under court order to shut down. The list of record companies that sued is impressive.

I have the latest version and it is now useless. All you get is this announcement saying court order yadda yadda yadda when you open it up.

Yeah, I heard about the court order, and I was sad.

But there are several entities here:

Limewire the company.
Limewire the website and original software distribution channels.
Limewire the code.
Gnutella the network.

The court order only applied to the first two above. I was using frostwire (mostly the same code as limewire) at the time, and while i was sad to see the limewire company get hassled and their website all-but-shutdown, it was clear this would have little effect on the users. Limewire is open source, and as there are enough developers using and loving it, the code will continue to be maintained and improved; even if all the original developers were dead.

I've *never* gotten a virus from limewire. If I'm stuck using virus prone windows, then I use vlc to play media, and do a spot virus check on executables before running them.

I support artists, and I support freedom. I think its morally wrong that limewire is being victimized in this case, as their software isn't inherently designed for piracy. I used limewire extensively for legal purposes.

Oh, and with all the comments about limewire being old, and torrents being the way to go: you all so right, which makes this 'victory' for the RIAA rapists hollow. They've scored another point against old tech. wow.

This is not directly related, but on the same general topic:

Peter Sunde of Pirate Bay fame has had it with ICANN. Now that the US government is ordering the Internet governance body to remove domain names of copyright infringers from the global DNS, Sunde has sounded a call to arms to create a new Domain Name System to help pirates remain masters of their domain. The new DNS would forego a centralized root—too attractive a target for meddling governments—and use peer-to-peer technology instead.

Pirate Bay is an oxymoron..as they have put themselves on the market and are now for sale to the highest bidder..last I read Hotflix (I think is the name, not sure) was interested...

We have access to soooo many sites..one gets closed down, four new ones spring up...
