I served. USN USS AMERICA CV-66 A.B.E.

Drydocked, Norfolk Va. ( the carrier was docked 6 years)

Became a hell of a janitor!

Ahhhhh the things that they never showed on Top Gun......

(actually, I never saw the movie but, I am fairly certain that they didn't show the guys in prison issue dungarees mopping the same damned deck for 6 years)

Thankful for the guys and dolls who served. Wish my enlistment rendered more than ninja jedi janitor status and more drugs than I have ever seen in my life but, we don't get to choose our orders.

Wow, you got to use a mop? We were on hands and knees washing the deck but luckily our ships were a heck of a lot smaller than the American ships. LOL

What kinda barge Girl? I was on an Aircraft carrier. 187 jets and 5,000+ guys..in its time, it was the big one. Then the Reagan docked next to us and was about 300' longer. I heard the Kennedy was insanely big.

We don't have aircraft carriers in our military. The ships I sailed on were the Annoplis Class destroyers. We were the first women to ever sail on combat ships in the Canadian Navy. I wrote an article for a book about my experiences. Many years ago we had an carrier called the Bonaventure. All my ships I sailed on are now reefs and we finally got some new ships. I was a boatswain.

Thanks for that info. I never knew there were no carriers in the Canadien Navy. We have the Aircraft carrier Midway here as a museum here in SD. Across the Harbor from us you can find the Aircraft carrier John Stennis and I also hear the Reagan is home ported here. I go down to the harbor and see these massive aircraft carriers and see that the Midway is puny compared to those across the way.

What I would have given to sail on a carrier just once. It would have been the hightlight of my career. By the way Op, thanks for putting this thread out there. Us Vets appreciate it.

THEY deserve a section here MORE THAN WE EVER DO!!!

It would be nice to have a Forum that was only for our fighting men and women..some place ALL of us could just pop in and make them aware we do care about them, PLUS, it would be real nice for FAMILY of them to have a special place to talk to and about their family member who is serving active duty now..

Hi, I am new to this place this is my first post except the intro bit. It's rather touching to see people post stuff up like this and I agree a section for serving people on here would be a good idea.

My dad died on active duty in the AF when I was 7. I have the utmost respect for those that have served and are currently serving. They will always be in m prayers.

i have just had a heap of our young Australian boys sent overseas, boys who where our friends, and when you stand at the airport and watch what they have to leave behind to keep us safe it breaks your heart. Sons begging Daddy to stay, babies who wont see there Daddy for years, and wives who will love them regardless.
You are all wonderful, and anyone who thinks differently is uninformed and stupid.
You boys and men are what keep us all safe and we thank you.

Yes, I agree. It is great and heroic what they do. My ex went to Iraq twice...was so scared for him, but so proud.

What MOS?

I am the Infantry.
I am my country's strength in war, her deterent in peace.
I am the heart of the fight, wherever, whenever.
I carry America's faith and honor against her enemies.
I am the Queen of Battle.

I am what my country expects me to be
the best trained soldier in the world.
In the race for victory,
I am swift,
determined,
and courageous,
armed with a fierce will to win.

Never will I fail my country's trust.
Always I fight on,
through the foe,
to the objective,
to triumph over all.
If necessary,
I fight to my death.

By my steadfast courage, I have won 200 years of freedom.

I yield not- to weakness,
to hunger,
to cowardice,
to fatigue,
to superior odds,
for I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight.

I forsake not-
my country,
my mission,
my comrades,
my sacred duty.

I am relentless.
I am always there, now and forever.

I AM THE INFANTRY!
FOLLOW ME!

Great idea! I have 5 years active under my belt. I do feel for the older vets who were treated with such disrespect after they returned from hell on Earth. I also dislike how some people view the military as a mindless job. I really feel like I can pretty much do anything I put my mind to now. Thanks to all those who have served!
