Bee Pollen has been touted as nature’s perfect food. As a supplement, bee pollen capsules are purported to increase energy and help boost the immune system. It is high in protein, carbohydrates, B-complex, and Vitamins A, C, D and E. It has been said that you could literally live off of raw bee pollen in an emergency as it has every vitamin, mineral, amino acid, and enzyme known to man.

In Chinese medicine, bee pollen is used as an energy tonic. Throughout the world, bee pollen is used in diverse ways – to improve endurance and vitality, to assist recovery from chronic illnesses, treat addictions by reducing cravings, extend longevity and prevent colds and flu. It is also believed that it may even possibly help to counteract the effects of radiation and chemical pollutants and to have anti-cancer properties. Only further studies can verify these hopeful theories.

But there are also serious reactions as at least 5% of Americans are allergic to ragweed pollen. In turn, bee pollen has pollen from ragweed or plants that cross-react with ragweed, like chrysanthemums, dandelions, and sunflowers. Some side effects are allergic reactions like itchy throat, wheezing, coughing, hives, and skin flushing.

Wow. Thank you Lace. It does sound very interesting. Some people take them everyday and swear by them. I also heard you can't take them if you are allergic to bees otherwise you will blowup like that blueberry girl from Willy Wonka..........smokin

Thats a good question. I think it has to do with the way it is collected. See there are people that catch these bees and scrape the pollen off there back legs (That is were bees carry there pollen). It is a cruel process. Sometimes a bee loses a leg in the process. All for the sake of science...........smokin

Bee Pollen contains seeds from flowers. Honeybees gather the pollen from flowers as they moisten it with a dab of honey. The pollen is collected from bees with a special device which is placed at the hive entrance.

It's the pollen that's being consumed, not the bees. Unless you have a penchant for the exotic. laugh

Anyhoo, what I know is that bees have the instinct to know where the high quality pollens are from all the plants in an area.

instinct sheesh
i'm sure that the bees pay off informants to know where the best pollen is

Interesting topic. I know that you can buy pollen patties at a bee supply company. It's used in the hives to stimulate the bees to make a queen for the hive. I never really thought about it much, so I looked to find more, and found this reference.
There are many reasons why you may want to feed pollen or pollen substitute:
Early spring buildup so you can make early splits.
Buildup in preparation for pollination (especially almond pollination).
To force building in preparation for a strong nectar flow.
To encourage early drone rearing for preparation for raising early queens.
To maintain drone and brood rearing though a strong dearth (again important for rearing queens in some areas)

Open feeding pollen substitute.
In fact, a protein source (pollen or pollen substitute) is critical for raising drones which is very important for rearing queens. When there is a shortage of protein drone brood is the first to go and in severe dearths even adult drones may be removed from the hive. (Steve Taber covers this in his book 'Breeding Super Bees')

(Please let me brag a little. My daughter just graduated with a double degree in Naturopathy and Chinese Medicine. I'm very proud of her. I'm going to ask her what she knows about this).

So the bees are little pirates who steal the pollen from plants and then make little gold doubloons out of it for humans to steal?spock

I read a report the other day about the honey bee population decreasing. That's probably because the little fellas can't get around like they used to......smokin

. In a sense, yes, but everybody gets something out of it. The plants get help in their reproductive process, the beekeeper gets honey out of it and the bees get to sustain their hives. It's a very Communistic system.

I know when my dad came down with MS in the 70's one of the alternative treatments was to actually be stung by bees. The other that I remember was snake venom. I can tell you he never got worse or relapsed.
