Eastern European and Jewish. On my Mom's side, my Grandmother's family was from Lithuania and my Grandfather's family was from Hungary. I've never been to either place. I don't know about my Dad's family, though, as he was adopted.

My mothers family is from Grammarcy(sp?), Louisiana...my dads father (adopted) is originally from some French province in Canada. His clan was exiled for some reason so they moved to Louisiana where my grandfather met my grandmother in Monroe. Most of my family is now in Baton Rouge, minus myself and one aunt. My favorite relative is my brother simply because he understands me better than anybody on the planet.

Only tradition we really followed growing up was opening up one present on Christmas Eve.

Best story: When my mom and dad were dating, they were visiting Mexico and were arrested (not sure of the validity of this story, but it was funny to hear)

On Dad's side, I'm directly descended from a Finnish deity, in an unbroken line of first born males. On my Mom's side, she is pretty much an American mutt. I did get to visit Finland. It's cold but pretty.

Thewron, do you speak Finnish? do you have a sense of the culture? I sense that Finns are just as much eccentrics as Hungarians, but in a slightly different way. Finns are more, much more lugubrious, and blonde, and fair; Hungarians are more into personal self-adoration and self-promotion,and they are more talkative and happy-go-morose. Both nationalities are heavily into introspection and individualistic all-encompassing theories, where each person in the land and in the city has his or her very and extremely different individual ideology, faith, weltanschauung and philosophy, and one thing about Hungarians is that they see the clear delineative differences between the above concepts, but I don't know if the Finns are also very so much convergently analytical and dissectively precise thinkers. I am writing this here, because that's exactly what I want to ask you.

MightyMoe, a penny for your thoughts as well, too, also.

Actually, I am not Wellsh. My family tree is hanged, though, lots of my forefathers were hanged. Our family tree can be visualized as a tree with only one branch, but that branch is solid, thick, like a rigid anaconda who'd mistakenly taken a large overdose of Viagra, and the branch comes out at a right-angle from the trunk.

My mom's parents were from Yugoslavia and my dads parents were irish and english, thus the "e" on Carole....the english spelling..
My mothers aunts would visit every summer and bring wonderful cookies that they would bake all week before they came..like they used to make in the "old country"
One tradition that I carried on with my children was that we got to open one present on Xmas eve.. It was always a new nightgown or pajamas...lol
I remember once when they came and I had been sick with rheumatic fever(was in bed for 4 months), they ask if they could lay their hands on me and pray that I get well... When they did that I had a warm feeling go thru my body and to this day have never had a heart problem..

What is your ethnic background?

I'm a mutt, but I identify more with my Irish and Scottish ancestry.

Where is your mom’s family from? Where is your dad’s family from?

Technically, my mom's family is from America....been here since 1645. However, one side is English, and the other is Scottish/English with some French. Both sides were among the original settlers of Old Lyme, CT. If anyone here is part of the Huntley National Association, then we are undoubtedly related somehow. My grandmother was a direct descendant of Capt. John Huntley.

My Dad's side is a split between Irish and German. His mother was full-blooded Irish, and the only member of her family born in America (Nova Scotia). His father was 3rd or 4th generation German-American, and somehow related to the Buckinghams.

Have you ever been there? What was that experience like?

No, but I would like to visit Ireland and the UK, as well as travel the Rhine and Danube someday.

What traditions have been passed down in your family?

Not much, although my maternal grandmother was the genealogist for our family. She passed it on to my mother, and my mother passed it on to me. I have a full record for the descendants of Capt. John Huntley, plus a 100 year old tome that records the families which settled New Haven County. I was also the first person in my family to uncover the names of my father's great grandparents. My paternal grandfather intentionally block all attempts to trace his side of the family.

In 2009, I discovered that my great grandfather died in a swimming accident when he was 28. Shortly afterward, my great great grandmother disappeared, but turned up in New York, and later in another State. Effectively, she abandoned the family. Hence my grandfather hated that side of the family, and refused to allow the family name of Pratt to be used. Now we understand more about him as a result of my research.

Who were your favorite relatives?

I was Grandpa Lee's boy...dubbed it from the day I was born, and his first name is my middle name. I always got along well with my uncles from the Lee side too, to the point that one would take me on vacation with him.

Do you remember any of the stories they used to tell you?

Several, though I remember more stories by my father and my maternal grandmother. My father is dying from cancer, so I am keeping him company and helping him out. He tells me a lot of stories to pass on his memories. My grandmother was always a social person, well-liked by family and friends. I heard many of her stories again and again. I used to stay at her house for 2 weeks during the summer to help with gardening and yard work.

What are the classic family stories? Jokes? Songs?

My grandmother would fall asleep while sitting in our living room, head tilted back, mouth-wide open, but not snoring. When she woke up she refused to admit she was sleeping. She was "resting her eyes" instead.

She also told us a story about a woman she used to know who she adamantly swore swallowed a needle and it came out the woman's elbow. She claimed she saw it with her own eyes.

My father's classic is from Hurricane Carol in 1954. He was at Misquamicut in Rhode Island then night before it hit. After the hurricane, he walked through the destruction. All the hotels along the beach, including the one he had stayed in two nights previous, were gone, as were most of the houses for almost a mile inland. While walking through the wreckage, he came across a foundation with no house. About a half mile later, he came across what appeared to be the remains of the house. It was little more than a frame and a floor. The fridge was still there. Out of curiosity, my dad opened the fridge, and there was still some beer and food inside it. From behind him, he heard a woeful voice quietly say, "That's our house." The couple was standing behind him. They could only recognize the house by the contents of the fridge.

In our family we also celebrated gift-giving on Xmas eve. We have also preserved and upheld a long and proud family tradition: We steal the candy out of the wrappers that hang from the tree. By the end of boxing day all candy is eaten. Only by a veritable miracle can you find a wrapper on the tree, still with untouched candy inside.

My favourite relatives were my first cousin Ildi, whom I always wanted to bang; and our other first cousins, Erzsi and Klari. Erzsi I badly wanted to bang. Klari and I almost banged once, but her kid was in the room. Klari kept saying the kid is fast asleep, but I was chicken, because I was still a virgin. Klari was not, at the time, very obviously.

I also had two other favourite relatives: My stepmother, Erzsi, a blonde older beauty, whom dad married after Mom died. I was aching to bang my stepmother. Then the other favourite relative was my stepsister, Erzsi, whom I was screaming to bang.

But don't put too much thought into it, because all these relatives never left Hungary, and I am still a virgin on Hungarian soil. (I guess that's where the expression "virgin land" comes from.) Also don't put please too much thought into it, because these women were prominent in my horizon between 14-17, and in those years the only people I wouldn't bang even for a thousand dollars were my sister and all males in the world. All the rest, 18+, I was ready to bang, as well as being fully willing and fully erect a hundred percent of the time.
