Topic: Has a Book Changed Your Life?

Has anybody had the experience of reading a book that so completely blew your mind that it ended up changing your life?

I'll go first. When I was about 14 I read The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot. That one poem introduced me to Eastern philosophies, which have had a huge effect on my life ever since. There are 1 or 2 other books that are very important to me, but without that one poem, I would be quite a different person today.

Anybody else?

Animal Farm had a deep effect on me as a child.

"The Law of Attraction" and "Ask and it is given" were life changing.

"The Holographic Universe."

I have lots of books all over my house. They are my prize possessions.

 The Bible. Psalm. 92.

References to Readings have been best gifts from my ancestors. This Psalm is my rock. It rocks.
smooched smooched

So many passages! So many anecdotes because members of my family and friends ate from different beliefs. There's a unique heart and mind openess to learn and to understand from each other.

So Jenniebean and Teadipper, how did those books change how? What was the difference from before to after?

Of course, you don't have to share that if you don't feel like it. I'm just curious.

Quirky Alone, I realized it was better to be alone with my own quirks than to be with someone who wanted to change me and that for a relationship to work you have to kind someone who doesn't mind your quirks and you don't mind theirs.

Or as my brother, Alan says, "We are all crazy. It's just finding someone a kind of crazy you can live with".

The Little Prince.

It reenforced for me that it's better to get your heart broken and then die than be boring.

I actually LOVE this book.

It's up there with "Harold and his Purple Crayon" and "Where the Wild Things Are".

One of my best friend, Mark, had me curl up with him when he was terminally ill and we sat up all night while he read me "Jonathan Livingston Seagull". He liked the idea that you got to keep coming back until you got it right. I hated it. I was like "Screw that, just let me transcend without having to do it over and over". It is a good memory. Sitting curled up with my gorgeous guy friend friend in a cabin in the San Bernandino (sp) Mountains of a leather couch and him reading me this book in his gorgeous voice and perfect pentameter.

Also,

Second Hand Dog

and

Creating a Peaceable Kingdom

When I write, it's usually non-fiction about pets.

These too books are excellent.

The first is no non-sense and written with humor. It's all about the psychology and everything of a dog that has been abandoned by it's humans and what you have to do to "make it a first rate pet'.

The second teaches you how to make any humans and companion animals live together in harmony.

Awesome under-appreciated books.

I love The Little Prince too. Don't know how many times I cried while reading it. Plus, my copy has a romantic inscription from a guy I used to know, the incredibly handsome one who was looking for the perfect woman and therefore never went out with me. It always surprises me because I have no memory at all of him giving it to me.

Many books have changed my view of the world and people. So, I guess that's the same as changing my life. I can't remember which ones they were, but, then again, I can't remember the names of my children most days either.

Was one of them 'How To Eat Fried Worms'?

GREAT book! Of course it was. I thought that one was a given for all of us.

So many.

Words That Hurt, Words That Heal: How to Choose Words Wisely and Well - Joseph Telushkin

is one I always recommend to people. It will change the way you think
about what you say and write.
