Topic: Privacy, what is it? | |

Is privacy about what we wish to share or what we dont wish to be shared with us?
I see a dichotomy in our culture where so many are talking about how government should stay out of our 'private' lives, but at the same time there seems to be this big push to make people accept anything and everything others may wish to do or say in public should nudity be private? should sexual activity be private? should relieving oneself be private? how do we , as a society, find the balance between allowing people their right to privacy without completely trampling on peoples ability to have some security about what environment they will have their children in? I know I am fine with heterosexual pda of the old fashioned kind. Gentle pecks, holding hands, hugging, but I dont care for my c hildren to be exposed to two people virtually making out with their clothes on. I am fine with comfortable dress, but I dont care to see peoples butt cracks because their pants are too tight to cover them up if they sit or bend how much should my 'comfort' be permitted to step on the toes of the next persons,,,? |

privacy;
-the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people. -the state of being free from public attention. it's all personal. |

Privacy to me, is about keeping this things you yourself have no wish to share with anyone else exactly that... private.
What you do in your own home, information about your sex life, or bathroom habits, children etc... You have a right to a certain amount or privacy that you should be free to use or ignore at your leisure. The exception to this, is against those who use it as a shield to covert illegal or horrendous activities What I do not accept, are those people who put their business or information out for everyone to see, and then get upset because it suddenly went public. We all know the risks of posting info on facebook, or sending information over the phone, or even on occasion telling co-workers or whatever, and if you take that risk and it gets aired... well you were aware of the problems to begin with. Get mad, complain... whatever makes you happy, but in the end you opened that door. As far as comfort goes.... I get what you are saying and totally agree with it. There are things I personally would not wish to look at that are tolerated in public and there are things I feel do not belong in public. And in many places there is some public outcry on some of it... for example some places here are putting bans on baggy pants/revealing clothing not worn properly. Of course, there is a lot of people who feel it is their personal right to wear them, and although I certainly agree it is their right to dress like a hobo and halfway expose themselves to everyone around them, it is also my right to not have to be subjected to it. Thus, it becomes a clash of interests in which case it should be up to the business, city or what have you to decide. I feel the majority rules in an actual public setting. |

Well said. Facebook gets me too, how people dont understand that stuff goes PUBLIC for everyone to have free access to,,,,,
and even employers use it, although I disagree with the practice personally, because there is no assumption of 'privacy' once you post something in a public forum or do or say something in a public setting,,, |

Privacy is what you choose it to be.
Dropping off the grid works. Throwing yourself out there works too. Should nudity be private?.....depends on the moment. should sexual activity be private?......if that is what everyone agrees on......fine. should relieving oneself be private?....how long is the line at the bathroom? I have stood guard for more than one chick in my day. If a woman gotta pee...she gotta pee. |

Is privacy about what we wish to share or what we dont wish to be shared with us? I don't think MUCH is private anymore. Not that it shocks me in any way. I just don't like the thought of anyone watching me in my bathroom. How perverse does it have to get, until it makes people go mad? I don't like Big Brother. ![]() |

Well, I see privacy as the protection of sensitive data. It's not the governments job to set morals and ethics or to determine decency. Although, it is to create and enforce laws, and maintain order. |

I think the human race sometimes is just that, a race. What we apperiate and accept as true today is in the plans of consideration for tomorrow.
