Fear of commitment in much popular literature refers to avoidance of long-term partnership and/or marriage but the problem is often much more pervasive, affecting school, work, and home life as well.

The term commitmentphobia was coined in the popular self-help book Men Who Can't Love in 1987. Following criticism of the perceived sexist idea that only men were commitmentphobic, the authors provided a more gender balanced model of commitmentphobia in a later work, He's Scared, She's Scared.

well I would of been that youny man in 1987, I could never understand friends that always had
different relationships and moved in with woman sometimes a lot older with kids.
I'm sure I was scared for them, the thing with me was because I'm picky and if I got into a relationship
I would of wanted to see it to the end. so yes I contract for different companies all the time
I work all over, Im never happy when I'm single living in any place. the grass is always greener on the
over side (which it is if its change) keep on keepin' on.
I dont even like putting in tent pegs when I'm camping/traveling as it feels like a commitment.

I'm not a commitment phobe but at this stage in my life I am much more slow and careful to make commitments. I have had too many that did not work out - sometimes due to jumping in too quickly and sometimes for other reasons. Having a man in the home is a lot of extra work for me so he's gotta be worth it:wink: laugh

Yeah; I think I might be suffering the same phobia myself. Oh well; there are worse things in life.

I accept that a phobia may be the cause of some commitment avoiding people out there, but for the most part in my experience it is more often a case of the wanting being greater than the having.
