Heard from one of my friends over there. Haven't yet heard from a couple. Never really been so good at praying. My heart goes out to those who have lost.

For those who are wanting to be helpful in this painful tragedy can look to their own situation and do what they can to be prepared for and prevent disasters in their own lives.

Help resources are not infinite and those of us who can reduce our need by doing even the simplest things to prevent manmade disasters can free critical funds when the un-imaginal does occur.

It is fall and the holiday season always presents special preventable problems such as fire safety. Look at your home and see how secure your appliances, water heaters, large furniture is in an earth quake or heavy rains or even snow. Get involved in community efforts at building codes and zoning and emergency response training.

No one can be prepared for everything but if you reduce your loss and have some basic survival skills and supplies it can keep you and your loved better prepared to cope. Your children seeing you be prepared will find solace and learn responsibility even appreciation for those who do work so hard to keep us safe.

Sacramento is densely populated with extended families from the disaster area and so our local Comcast is offering free 24 hr TV from there. I don't know if that is universal across the USA but it is constantly broadcasting pictures of survivors if families friends have not been able to make contact.

Do you think it might just be Comcast? Or perhaps other providers? My mother hasn't been able to contact her sister yet, but communications in the farming province where she resides has been down still.

PRAYERS MADE VISABLE

The survivors are starting to flood into Sacramento so I am sure other communities and families here and elsewhere are scrambling to try to find housing, furnishings, and needed supplies.

If you have almost any useable hand-me-downs, food stuffs, and school supplies helping services and food banks will be grateful to get them.

Hand carts, rolling suitcases, back packs, and adult bikes are particularly helpful for shopping and getting around as families on meager budgets try to recoup.

Those that are willing to provide transportation to various services especially anyone that can haul used furniture and essentials from thrift stores and other donation centers to first homes are particularly helpful. Calling your local Council of Churches can refer you to churches that are particularly hard pressed by this influx of new members.

Habitat for Humanity will be glad to have volunteers to punch up their programs to improve any property you might want to share or rent or build housing. Locally, and I am pretty sure across the USA, their Restore (recycle) programs are an excellent place to donate furniture, tools, any useable building supplies for families that are doubling up for now and trying to furnish apartments later.

Most communities will have "Coats for Kid's" programs and almost all local school district do have clothing closets so if you have a few things for kids of any age to wear to school including shoes and boots will be most welcome.
