Anyone? Can you help me save my daughters photos from a computer that won't start up, probably due to viruses, or because it was 6 years old?

Will it not power up at all? I mean..... When you press the power button, does it do anything?

Depends on if it is electrical or virus boot sector hosed.

Try your secret buttons (depending on brand of pc) during boot up POSTing to enter into SAFE MODE to save files from there.

It's not funniest thing in the world to guide a novice through this in posts. Best to take it in.

Stay simple Teal. No need to confuse them with boot sectors or safe mode.

It probably would be wise to take it in though. Have them pull the hard drive and copy everything to a new one.

It powers up. Then the page says Windows failed to boot, and to select either Launch Startup Repair (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally. If I don't do anything it starts doing whichever selection is highlighted, and neither work. I have left it on all night to see if anything happens, but it always looks like it's trying to load but it's not happening. I can only turn it on and off using the power button. (I'm not a tech knowledgeable person, I couldn't even understand people talking about computers here).

No, do not start Win Normally. That is where you should be able to enter into SAFE MODE with limited VGA drivers. The screen will look funny and stretched big, just save your files from there in SAFE MODE.

What brand of pc is it?

Yes...... What Teal said. I would in fact shut the pc down for an hour or so and go from there.

Damn, it's so much easier in person.

Press and hold the F8 key while your computer restarts, just before the Windows logo displays on the screen. If your computer contains multiple operating systems, first highlight the one you wish to boot into Safe Mode using the arrow keys, then press the F8 key.

I shut it down now. I'm looking up the things you guys say to try to teach myself what you're talking about.

Thanks. I did the F8 (it made lot's of static noise), now it's doing startup repair because it says was unable to start, but I think the repair isn't working, well it says it's in progress but this has happened before and left it all night, but still the same. I can cancel but not go back or next. Should I turn it off and try F8 again?

Yes. Power off all the way. Wait 1 minute. When you get the selection screen after F8, use your up and down arrows to select SAFE MODE. hit ENTER.
