I suppose that there are a variety of people on this thread; The good Samaritans, the techies (not to be confused with trekies), the dazed & confused, the recruiters ("Hey you...Yeah you...Come over here and check this stuff out. It's the bomb).
Then there's the cheerleading section. That's me drinker

I sure could use some help. I am to the point where I want to close a stick of dynamite in my lap top.

I can not get the internal microphone to pick up sound.
I checked to see that it was compatible with windows, skype, made sure it was not muted and turned on, set as default, rebooted, went through all the trouble shooting guides ( everywhere ) and yet nothing, nada, zilch.

Now I am going to tell you what Lap top I have. Please don't laugh, it is very old.

Toshiba Satellite, model # PSAA5U-01300Q
system unit, A105-S2101
Serial #, 86187024Q

Thank you.
Robin
P.S. the microphone is Realtek HD audio

First question what version of Windows are you running?

Second questions have you tried this guide? it's pretty thorough.

My hope is its a configuration/software issue, if so the guide above should work. On the other hand, it could also be a hardware issue I. which case a new mic would be what you need, also I'd check the mic port on the side or back of the computer, make sure nothing is plugged/jammed into it

mmmmm, doesn't say anything about internal mic for her brand. Says external mic port. So it wouldn't be configuration or drivers.

Yes, buy a microphone.

oh yeah, Hiya Isaac.

doesn't matter if it's external or internal they both have configuration settings and drivers,(even if they come installed by default) granted the guide is for Windows 8 and an external mic, but most(if not all) settings will be similar.

Depending on if she is running the same brand of XP that came with her laptop, or if perhaps in the past she had someone do a clean install in the past. driver problems on laptops are (unfortunately) abundant.

Just finished fixing a laptop that my sister got back for a 'repair' shop, and all they did was re-install a XP, so many 'extras' that used to work no longer did, because they relied on windows generic drivers, things like 'touch sensitivity' won't work...sure the mouse will work, but without the right drivers those 'extras' won't work.

Granted Windows 'tries' to find the correct ones...but really how often does that happenlaugh

No need for drivers.

It may be a bad mic...... Rare occasion.
An external mic is cheap and will save you a headache.

Just pick one up and save the receipt if it doesn't solve the problem.
I'll delve into this topic more if this fails to work for you.
