I don't think there is only poverty in the 'developing world' or that there is only economic sexism outside of the west. Capitalism mixed with patriarchy are spread out around many cultures and countries and it's sad that too many ignore it.

Again, to accuse me of being sexist is ridiculous.

I think it is a combination of cultures where women dont hold 'power' and are almost forced to be TOTALLY dependent

and cultures where the women have new found power(in terms of history) and are Expected to be TOTALLY INDEPENDENT, even when there are children that a man helped to create,,,,

there is no wonder why its most often women who are living in poverty,,,,

 Now that is a VALID point!....The article in the opening post is about world poverty that places the focus on developing countries where the problem is proportionally critical...That does not mean there is not poverty world wide, nor does it mean poverty in any country is exclusive to women even though there are more women suffering poverty than men...In the same respect poverty cannot be blamed exclusively on sexism...

The article you posted is vague...It's not clear about the particular poverty these prominent women are speaking out about...They are referring to world poverty and in that context they are right...Developing countries are just beginning to enter the fight for equality...They are women who can't own or inherit the land they farm, women who can't own phones or open bank accounts, access electricity or retain an attorney...They're talking about the female babies being born in villages who are not being registered at birth...Millions of girls and women AROUND THE WORLD live in poverty due to the extreme sexism that exists in their "developing" countries...

Your thread title and choice of the article used in your OP seems to be designed solely for the purpose of winding up male members...IMO that is as sexist as it gets...pitchfork
THAN YOU could not have said it better

there are people who don't question the status quo. because it's traditional for the man to be in charge, when you speak of freedom or power of women, all you get is a blank stare.
even in countries that have more social development and higher education.
some cultures that aren't westernized value the sense of community as opposed to the individual. (even some of the still native tribes in the Americas).
one would have to evaluate all of the factors of social conditioning instead of making the judgement or assumptions.

The article is about ending poverty of women worldwide not only in developing countries. Also, the point of the article is not that poverty is exclusively sexist, but that poverty is sexist because most of the poor happen to be women, even in developed countries like the US.
