Oh boy, this is a doozy... boycott Israel in Canada and get charged with a hate crime? Some of my favorite people are Jewish and even they question this absurdity in a free country.

Yes that's right... boycotting a religion

boycotting a country behaving badly is quite different, anyone has a right to boycott... it's the sole fiber of democracy. I'm not one to but I respect those who do.

There's no reason for it to get ugly Sassy...

It just goes directly against our Charter of rights and Freedoms, such draconian measures would be impossible in the US, for a reason.

Just a side note,

On the heels of a bitter objection by the Federal Canadian government to grant bail to Omar Khadr, you know, the 15 yr old kid who spent 13 years in jail, most of those in Guantanamo? tortured, isolated? In fact, the mighty Harper never once made a request to get him back here, it was the courts who got him here, the courts granting bail.

So we let kids suffer in foreign torture chambers, restrict boycotts & free speech to Israel, encourage free speech against Muslims . I'm confused. This isn't the country I remember... 4 more months!

Well as a Canadian, let's see if we can straighten this out.

Ok, there is a political activist group run by PALESTINIANS who are working feverishly on getting Israeli products boycotted around the world. Apparently, they've had some success.

The Canadian government considers the little band of merry activists to be anti-semitic. In Canada it is a crime to engage in behavior that would encourage violence for example against an identifiable group. So if I stand on a street corner saying "Kill black people!" I get to go to jail.

The government in it's infinite wisdom (or lack of it) says that since an identifiable group (Jews) are being targeted, then that's a hate crime. Of course since this is an economic boycott, and NOT a call for violence, this is not going to fly. If it was allowed to stand then in theory people could not refuse to buy products from countries that torture women, or molest children. Ludicrous of course.

It will fizzle out shortly when enough lawyers tell the government they will get their a$$ kicked in court should they actually try to lay a charge.

Spain, in 1347, was actually one of the first European
countries, to strip jews of their basic rights, property
rights, etc...

Yes that's right, political terror, that's all this was

United Church of Canada and the Canadian Quakers, McMasters students and labour unions. Are NOT Palestinian fueled, these are entities that refuse to encourage land grabs for profit, they've been calling for the labeling of products from occupied lands and boycotting those... hardly hatin IMO

The Jews, brought pastrami to us.
The quakers, brought oatmeal.

I see no competition there.
Pastrami wins.

Politicians keep passing laws to pretend like they deserve their jobs, to show they are "doing something."

A lot of the laws passed are extremely vague in how they can be interpreted. (obamacare tax or not a tax, subsidies for state run only, the tax code, provisions for "guilty mind," anti bullying laws).

Pass enough vague laws and any government agency can use them to make anything you do illegal if they want to.

And not to mention, with google, and facebook, and apple, and all sorts of social media, where people ejaculate everything they do on the internet, it makes evidence gathering that much easier.

I don't think it's absurd for a government to do this.
I think it's just business as usual.

Western leaders from Europe to the US and Canada are stupid to allow themselves to be pulled into the contentiousness of Islam. Or the rivalries of any religion.
