Philadelphia Pa- A Northeast Regional Amtrak Train 1888 * the busiest passenger line in the country, Washington DC to New York* derailed shortly after 9pm last night.
At the Frankford junction, in the Richmond section of the city.

238 passengers
5 crew
6 dead (2 women decapitated)
146 injured (mostly from flying objects & people)
25 still hospitalized
8 remain in critical condition

Former Republican Congressman was on board (& is now on Twitter w/ photos)

Philadelphia Mayor, Michael Nutter-
" We do not know what happened here. We do not know why it happened"

The impact tore 7 cars sending them flying from the tracks & left the engine mangled, 3 cars were left upright, 3 cars on there side & " a seventh car is leaning hard" . So far there is nothing to indicate an act of terrorism.

White House press Secretary, Josh Earnest said on CNN's 'New Day' (show), The Obama administration is 'hard at work' trying to figure out what caused the crash, and that their prayers & thoughts are with the families of everyone effected.

I appreciate that. I know many people in that area & know that station.
Perhaps... old tracks/ infrastructure etc.. The President of Amtrak has been a big advocate of complete overall, for a long time.
But no evidence.... yet as to the cause.

Ghosts maybe caused it?

"" A train crash sparked chaos in the Port
Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia
Tuesday night, but seven decades prior, an
even deadlier one took place nearby in what's
known as Frankford Junction.

On September 6, 1943, 79 people were killed
and 116 wounded in the Congressional
Limited crash, one of the deadliest rail
accidents in U.S. history. At the time, the train
was the fastest on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Like the Amtrak train, the Congressional
Limited was traveling from D.C. to New York,
a popular commute along the Northeast
corridor, both back then and now. It crashed
near Kensington Avenue and Pacific Street,
according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, less
than a mile from the Amtrak train's accident
site in the 2200 block of Westsheaf Lane. The
tracks along Frankford Junction follow a large
bend.
The Limited had nearly double the amount of
passengers as Amtrak 188, 541 in total. At the
time, the Limited disaster was the worst train
crash in the U.S.. The accident occurred on a
busy Labor Day weekend with many families
and furloughed military servicemen aboard.
"I never heard such crying and screaming
before," Norman Ebinger, an air raid warden,
told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at the
time. "The panic was terrible. The screams of
the injured and dying cut right through me.""

(And no, no I dont believe ghosts caused it lol)

I would hope that before the talking points of 'TERRORIST' came out in print; that the media ilk of CNN would at least allow for the plausible assumptions that this railway line is one of the busiest in the nation...and that Amtrak has been known to have accidents!

Just like those most frequent freight trains carrying crude oil do!

WaPo: 'Crumbling Infrastructure' Behind Rise in Derailments
Wednesday, 13 May 2015 09:44 AM

"America's crumbling infrastructure" is the main culprit for the increase in Amtrak derailments in recent years, with "freak accidents" playing a supporting role, according to The Washington Post.

A safety analysis by the Federal Railroad Administration found that there were two Amtrak derailments in 2012; three in 2013; six in 2014; and already nine in the opening months of 2015.

Six people died and at least 146 people were injured when an Amtrak train traveling from Washington to New York on Tuesday night derailed in Philadelphia, CNN reported Wednesday morning. Eight of the injured were in critical condition, the station said.

Information is being updated as rescue workers sift through the "mangled wreckage" in daylight.

Amtrak, the Post reports, is a for-profit corporation subsidized by the federal government that doesn't turn a profit. It's treated as a stepchild when it comes to funding allocations, according to National Journal contributor Simon Van Zuylen-Wood, who in April penned a piece titled, "Why Can't America Have Great Trains?"

"While Amtrak isn't currently in danger of being killed, it also isn’t likely to do more than barely survive," he wrote. "Last month, the House of Representatives agreed to fund Amtrak for the next four years at a rate of $1.4 billion per year. Meanwhile, the Chinese government - fair comparison or not — will be spending $128 billion this year on rail."

The funding decision came as Amtrak ridership has increased by some 50 percent since 2000, according to Van Zuylen-Wood.

He adds that ridership in the Northeast Corridor reached an all-time high in 2014, with Amtrak accounting for 77 percent of all rail and air travel between Washington and New York.

Amtrak CEO Joseph Boardman told the Atlantic last year that the federal government has never been willing to invest enough money to "bring the infrastructure up where it belongs on existing capacity" according to the Post.

Half of all derailments are the result of equipment failures while the other half are caused by "broken, settled, spread, shifted, or overturned rails," according to University of North Dakota mechanical engineering professor George Bibel, who in 2012 wrote "Train Wreck: The Forensics of Rail Disasters."

According to National Transportation Safety Board statistics, there were 891 rail fatalities in 2013. Of those, 520 involved trespassers and nontrespassers, 20 involved employees and contractors, six were passengers and 321 involved light, heavy and commuter rail.
