Genus: Agelenidae. "Funnel web spiders" or funnel web weaving spiders. Not to be confused with the Funnel web spider.
The Brown Recluse as you have down there and the Hobo Spider in parts in the west.which is a Euro spider. Easiest way to tell them apart is by the noise. The Hobo spider always goes "Ello, ello, ellowhoa seriously,
Know your spiders.keep the right ones in and they will keep the wrong ones out.

this is the one i was talking about: (wiki) Atracinae, commonly known as Australian funnel-web spiders, is a subfamily of spiders in the funnel-web spider family Hexathelidae.[1] Atracinae consists of three genera: Atrax, Hadronyche, and Illawarra. The subfamily includes species with medically significant venom, six species of which have severely envenomed human victims. The bite of the Sydney funnel-web spider (Atrax robustus) is potentially deadly, but there have been no fatalities since the introduction of modern first aid techniques and antivenom.[2] The subfamily contains 35 species. All members of the subfamily are native to Australia.[1]

there's another to watch out for here, that lives in South America banana clusters (Brazilian Wandering Spider)... sometimes they are found in the bananas we buy here

very aggressive, not scared to attack anything that disturbs it

I don't think so. We would know. They are very picky what comes in and there would have been a warning on the news. The government are very protective of the industries because of export.

Wow Mightymoe,
That was interesting, glad they are not here. Thanks for the website. I have put it in a file because if I teach a unit on spiders I can use that.

spiders are generally very docile, they like to be left alone... but there is always the exceptions...lol

There will be no problem there I won't be touching them. Over seas they are huge I would not be standing on them. I think I would run lol. Do they come into your homes or stay outside?

the little ones make some webs every now and then, but i just leave them alone to eat the pesky bugs... when i lived in the country, i've found scorpions, black widows, snakes, grasshoppers as big as my foot(i fed them to the black widows), brown recluses(i did kill them, they are nasty and like to wander around to much) lizards and toads in the house before...

shocked scared
Where the heck do you live?
Just the thought of them climbing into your bed or it comes out as you open a cupboard.
totally screaming out of the house. I had to get a 4 year old and a 6 year old to move little harmless lizard out of the house in Rarotonga.

Dated a guy who had pet tarantulas. One day he put one in his mouth, chased and tried to kiss me...somehow during the chase he ended up with a busted mouth and a dead spider and i ended up single.

so why are you thinking about it? that was when i lived in the country in Texas, near Dallas... but the last 10 years i lived there, the scorpions and big spiders were gone, the fire ants ate them all... they are worse than any spider, IMO...

Would other arachnids count? I've had two Emperor scorpions as pets in the past.

No to spiders. They are not pets. I like animals I can cuddle up with like dogs and cats. Just today, I went to my local thrift store and they have a cat their that hangs out, so I sat with her on the couch to pet her and she was purring loudly and really showed that she liked having me pet her and talk to her and she didn't want me to leave. That is a pet. Do spiders do that?
