The Dominican Republic is set to deport residents that can't prove their citizenship.
Some of them may be Haitians.
But what of others? Some Dominicans were born at home, and have no birth certificate.

And Haiti is among the poorest nations in the hemisphere. It still hasn't recovered from the Earthquake.

How can Haiti handle the likely influx?

wouldn't Haiti be France's problem? i know Haiti is an old French colony, i think Dominica is from Spain... either way, it doesn't sound like a US problem...

LTme,
Geez I am at a total lost on this issue
Immigration & Illegal immigration is such a HOT topic in North America & for some people & parties a very sensitive one.
One thing, I am certain of with your topic is, we (USA) can NOT afford to help Hatti or the Dominican Republic.
We can NOT afford the ILLEGAL ALIENS we have now & are not deporting them quickly enough.
It's NOT like we can borrow more money from CHINA to keep all the people we already are supporting.
(No matter how many votes it would buy laugh )

I know this is going to sound harsh. I apologize for that ahead of time...

This isn't a U.S. problem let other countries step up.
We have enough issue in our own country let someone else take care of it. We americans don't need this headache.

I do think Americans should do something like this but of course we won't...

Well we both know this has been a problem for decades..we do need to do something since America is broke whether people realize it or not.

Lots of hot potato tossing here.

It wasn't my intention to suggest it's a U.S. responsibility.
Only that human misery is multiplying there again.

I'm not formally a religious man.
But I have learned that counting my blessings (metaphorically) helps to make my life seem more worthwhile.

This is what it looks like out my kitchen window, after a fresh snow:

I'm not gloating at the woes of the residents of this troubled island.
But in that context, I (& I hope, we) have it pretty good.

And anyone that would like to help, if the Red Cross gets involved, you may be able to donate $10.oo by dialing a phone number.

We can't expect Jeb Bush, to 'Handle It' or do right by the NATURAL born, NATIONALIZED or LEGALIZED/ Carded RESIDENTS. Especially NOW that he has a whole new set of linguistics. *No Haba Espanol laugh*

wouldn't Haiti be France's problem? i know Haiti is an old French colony, i think Dominica is from Spain... either way, it doesn't sound like a US problem...

Haiti kicked them out in 1804 I think, and founded a Republic which quickly descended into a Dictatorship!
BTW,Dominica and Dominican Republic are two different animals!

I realize that it was not your intention or that you implied that the US or Canada, financialy pick up the tab for immigrants/ refugees. And that your mindset is humanitiatian.

However the mere mention of the word ' immigration' will set a fire under ALL " English Speaking " people/ counties, since WE are ALL overburdened financialy , with changing laws, communities, crime because of the massive influx & severely lax immigration & deportation laws & policies.
* Not to mention the P.C. bulls@@t *

Folks, this website does not cater exclusively to people in the USA,
and the first post in this thread doesn't mention the USA.
So, there was no need to mention the USA while responding to the OP.

I would agree with this statement except for one fact..It seems in recent history, the U.S. seems to have to be involved in all immigration issues we can't seem to mind our own business while our own country is a hot mess where this topic is concerned.

As far as donating for food, clothing, medications etc.. I will and do send regular donations.

When I was in DR many years ago, it was a beautiful seemingly peaceful country. There were several different types of police and/or military around who were always pulling you over and hitching rides to town, but they were nice about it.

The island isn't that big and we drove around the island and into Haiti. There was no border crossing to speak of, it just turned into a slum. I don't know how the DR could keep the Haitians out.

Going back and forth between the two countries on the same island shows how much difference the political system makes to stability and prosperity.

Maybe start with some facts...This issue is deportation of some 470,000 Haitian migrant workers whose presence in the Dominican Republic is the cause of major (deadly?) racial tension...The DR knows that stripping citizenship from children born to Haitian immigrants and rendering them stateless is not the answer...If I understand it correctly, they are allowing those subject to deportation to register and it appears that over half are doing just that and more will follow...Those who do not will be handled case by case...So good on the Dominican Republic...Most countries are remaining silent because they have their own immigration and border problems and they want to deal with them in their own way...Human rights groups and concerned humanitarians 'the world over' are free to help in any way they wish,,,,,what they are not free to do is demand government involvement...IMO....

Just this AM I heard a radio report that called the current Mediterranean refugee crisis the worst in Western Europe since WWII.

Looking for the big picture here, not sure what the problem is:

Too many bad people running nations badly (or driving them into anarchy)?

Too many people?
