It is not a term we use in my Continent
So many people use this term.
Is it a Country/Continent expression?
What does it mean?
Is this singly a Christian term or does it apply to other religions?
Argh, what does Godfearing mean?

I just saw the term used in a ladies profile, who says she is from Rome.
I always thought it was scam lingo too.
That is why I want clarification.

when I have heard it used in real life it's usually in connection to a person who is old fashioned, modest, lives highly by their religious beliefs.
like my partner at work used to tell me there were certain things that weren't discussed in front of her mother in law because she's old school and a God fearing woman.

God fearing is absolutely not meant you are a scammer.... It means you have fear on God and dont do things which are not appropriate as a good person. Simple as, has a fear on God!

Actually, it just means you believe in God and fear what may happen if you do something to make him angry, such as violate the Ten Commandments. It is in such common use as to mean, truly religious as opposed to just "lip service".

It actually has significant historical context. The United States was formed as a Constitutional Government based on Judaeo Christian beliefs. In a court of law, you are required to "swear" that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God. It used to be that this act was always done with your hand on the Bible. The theory is that if you don't tell the truth, God will punish you. In any case, it is supposed to stop you from "bearing false witness" by virtue of being "God Fearing". The US justice system is based on the belief that all men are "God Fearing".

So all continents use it, just not mine?
Maybe Annie has heard of it? She is a New Zealander like me.
We dont use that in everyday conversation like 'She is / I am a God fearing woman'.
Interesting points, thanks :)

I've heard the term before too. My grandparents' generation said it more than people do now. It means that they are very religious and live that way.

Fear in the Word does not only mean to be terrified, but it means, reverencing, honouring and respecting God(His Word), His commandments, precepts and living a life accordingly.

Respecting who He is, an almighty, perfect, holy, just and righteous creator. It means you are living a godly and holy life.

The words 'God-fearing' are not to be used lightly but they are nowadays.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom: Prov. 1:7; 9:10 Psalm 111:10

Personally I think it's one of the most stupid terms I have ever heard.
What is there to fear about God. God respecting would be a better term for me.

God fearing according to wickapedia means devout religious. In the Bible Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great impact on the way we live our lives. The fear of God is respecting Him, obeying Him, submitting to His discipline, and worshipping Him in awe.

This is not a phrase used for scammers. They may use this to lure you into their profiles- always look at the context, and if you start talking to people use good discernment and wisdom. In the Bible it says you will know them by their fruit- that is the fruit of the spirit- joy, kindness, love, patience, long suffering, gentleness.

I would prefer saying God fearing rather than Christian because there are many lukewarm Christians who think it is okay to do things that goes against the grain of what the Bible says. The Bible is the book of life- and we should follow it. Repentance and forgiveness isn't a get out of everything clause- it is there to know that you made a mistake and to bring it to awareness so you can correct your sinful nature. You need to kill the flesh to walk more freely in Holiness with the Lord.
I have heard this term used all over the world.

1 John 4;18-19
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.

God fearing is not a term I would use to describe my relationship with God. I respect Him, obey Him, but fear, no.

you can both fear and love, but love does not HAVE to mean fear

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. proverbs 1:7

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. matthew 10:28

And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’” job 28:28

And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. luke 1:50

He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” genesis 22:12

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. 2 cortinthians 7:1

there are many types of love and many types of fear,, I both fear and Love God
