The University Of Chicago
Monday Classes and Activities at Hyde Park Campus Canceled Due to Threat ![]() NOVEMBER 29, 2015 Date: November 29, 2015 To: University of Chicago Campus Community From: Robert J. Zimmer Subject: Monday Classes and Activities at Hyde Park Campus Canceled Due to Threat The University was informed by FBI counterterrorism officials today (Sunday) that an unknown individual posted an online threat of gun violence against the University of Chicago, specifically mentioning “the campus quad” on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday. All non-medical faculty, students and non-essential staff are asked not to come to the Hyde Park campus on Monday, or to remain indoors as much as possible if they are on campus. Students in College Housing are asked to stay indoors and await direct communication from College Housing Staff. In response to the threat, the University will have an increased police and security presence on and around campus, including police personnel with visible weapons and other additional measures. University security personnel are keeping in close contact with the FBI, which is continuing to investigate the threat. In addition to canceling all classes and events at the Hyde Park campus, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the University of Chicago Charter School campuses, the University libraries, the Quadrangle Club, and other campus facilities will be closed on Monday. The University of Chicago Medical Center will remain open to patients, with added security measures. Student Health and Counseling Services will be closed; students may consult csl.uchicago.edu for additional information. Medical Center faculty and staff involved in patient care will receive additional details later this evening. All University staff and faculty members who do not have emergency duties or patient care responsibilities are encouraged to avoid coming to the Hyde Park campus on Monday. Individuals with questions about their status should contact their immediate supervisors. We will provide updates at the University homepage, www.uchicago.edu, as more information becomes available, with the expectation of resuming normal University operations on Tuesday. If you see anything unusual or have urgent questions about security measures, please contact the University of Chicago Police Department at 773-***-**** Students living on campus who are seeking additional information should contact their resident heads. Anonymous student quote
"I'm not going down there tomorrow, and I don't have plans on going down there on Tuesday," said the student, who only wanted to be identified as Will. "For a threat like this, I want to give a few days to cool off. I think it's pretty extraordinary that the president interceded and canceled everything. I think that suggests something pretty serious is happening." http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-university-of-chicago-threat-cancels-classes-met-20151129-story.html#nt=outfit/ |

Chicago Tribune- 40 minutes ago 1 in custody in threat at University of Chicago linked to Laquan McDonald shooting JOSE M. OSORIO / CHICAGO TRIBUNE University of Chicago security officers patrol the Hyde Park campus quad on Nov. 30, 2015, after the university announced a day earlier that all classes and other activities planned for Monday would be canceled because of a threat of violence. Jodi S. Cohen, Lolly Bowean 1:37 pm, November 30, 2015 An online threat to kill 16 white male students or staff in retaliation for the shooting of Laquan McDonald forced the University of Chicago to cancel classes and close its Hyde Park campus Monday, the Tribune has learned, and one person was taken into custody in connection with the threat. A University of Illinois at Chicago student has been arrested in connection with the threat. A statement from the U. of C. said charges were pending. As the University of Chicago was eerily quiet Monday morning, more information emerged about the imminent threat, detailed in a police report obtained by the Tribune. On Sunday morning, a New York resident called the FBI to report a comment he saw on the website www.worldstarhiphop.com, posted in response to a video clip from the 1995 movie "Panther." The commenter threatened to shoot and kill students, staff and police on the campus at 10 a.m. Monday and then kill himself, citing the fatal shooting last year of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by a Chicago police officer. The officer, who shot McDonald 16 times, was charged last week with first-degree murder. "This is my only warning. At 10AM Monday morning, I'm going to the campus quad of the University of Chicago. I will be armed with an M-4 carbine and two desert eagles, all fully loaded. I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time McDonald was killed," wrote the commenter, who posted with the initials "JRD" and a Chicago Bulls logo, according to the police report. "I will then die killing any number of white policeman in the process. This is not a joke. I am to do my part and rid the world of white devils. I expect you do the same." An FBI agent contacted the U. of C. Police Department and, after daylong discussions, President Robert Zimmer alerted the campus community Sunday night that all classes and other activities planned for Monday would be canceled. Zimmer asked staff and faculty members who do not have emergency duties or patient care responsibilities to stay away from campus, and students who live on campus were asked "to remain indoors as much as possible." The unknown caller to the FBI said the video clip from the "Panther" movie showed a group of African-Americans carrying weapons and "racist police officers" hitting them, according to the police report. The FBI agent in New York could not find the posting on the website, "but found it credible enough" to alert the Chicago FBI office and university police. "Based on the FBI's assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday," Zimmer said in the email. U. of C. plans to reopen campus on Tuesday. On Monday morning, though, instead of students hustling across the quad with their backpacks, university and Chicago police patrolled the campus, some in SWAT gear and others parked at the corners of major intersections. Normally, Lingwei Cheng would see her fellow students zipping across the quad on their bicycles and chatting with each other, but on Monday the 22-year-old graduate student was alone as she walked across the 5600 block of South Kimbark Avenue. Canceling class wouldn't interrupt her learning, Cheng said, because she doesn't normally have classes Monday. But she was locked out of the school's library, kept out of the computer labs and unable to access the student center. "It's kind of crazy that just because someone posted online a threat that it would lock down the campus," said Cheng, who is from China. "This is like finals season so maybe people appreciate having today off. But how do we know it won't happen tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow?" Instead of going to class on Monday, Kevin Zen said he was going to use the day to work more hours at his part-time job. The 20-year-old student from Albany, New York, said he wasn't sure how serious the threat was, but he supported university officials' caution. "I'm glad the university made this decision and I completely respect it and I think it's great they put the well-being of faculty, staff and students ahead of anything else," he said, as he waited for a bus on South Woodlawn Avenue and East 55th Street. "It's necessary and professors are making accommodations to make up work at a future date." Closing the school for the day makes the recent campus shootings across the nation seem even more real, students said. While he's not afraid, Zen, a third-year student, said he's certainly aware. "There is certainly an anxiety where you don't know what's going on and there has been a threat made and it stays in the back of your mind," he said. "But I place trust in the university and the local police and the surrounding community. I'll attend class tomorrow and so will most students." http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-85187056/ |

HYDE PARK & KENWOOD
Crime & MayhemEducation Student Who Threatened To Kill Whites at U. of C. Released to Mom By Sam Cholke December 1, 2015 — A college student who threatened to kill 16 white students or staff members at the University of Chicago — leading the school to cancel classes Monday — was ordered released from federal custody Tuesday. Jabari Dean, a 21-year-old electrical engineering student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, left the federal courthouse Tuesday afternoon with his mom and lawyer. He was charged Monday with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Dean posted threats from his mother’s phone on the website Worldstarhiphop.com on Saturday and then later deleted it, but not before a tipster sent the comments to federal agents in New York, according to the FBI. "I will be armed with a M-4 Carbine and 2 Desert Eagles all fully loaded," the online post states, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. "I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time Mcdonald was killed. I then will die killing any number of white policemen that I can in the process. This is not a joke. I am to do my part to rid the world of the white devils." At a hearing Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Cox ordered him released to serve home detention at his mother's Grand Crossing apartment and ordered him not to use the internet. The judge allowed him to stay in classes at UIC. He will forfeit $4,500 if he misses his next court hearing. "This turned out better than I thought, " said Phillip Rutherford, Dean's uncle, after the hearing. "Everyone was professional and that was the best we could hope for." Officials and family members said they didn't think Dean had the means to commit the crimes he threatened. His uncle couldn't say why he targeted the Hyde Park school. "Why did he pick the University of Chicago? I don't know. It's silly," Rutherford said. Dean and his family members did not comment as they left the U.S. Dirksen Federal Courthouse Tuesday. Although the judge allowed him to attend class, Bill Burton, a spokesman for UIC, declined to comment on whether he would be allowed to return or what disciplinary actions Dean may face at the school. "Whenever a student faces criminal charges they may also face disciplinary measures," Burton said. The university, U. of C. Laboratory School, charter schools and other institutions on campus resumed normal hours on Tuesday morning. “The university will leave additional security presence in place through the end of the autumn quarter,” said university President Robert Zimmer in a letter to faculty and staff on Monday evening. ------------------------------------------------ Are they joking ?
