(Gator photo courtesy of Brevard County Sheriff's Office; pond photo by Greg Pallone, Staff) By Greg Pallone, Brevard County Reporter Last Updated: Monday, December 07, 2015 BAREFOOT BAY -- An accused burglar is dead after Brevard County deputies said he hid in a pond while on the run and was killed by an 11-foot-long alligator. Matthew Riggins, 22, of Palm Bay was reported missing Nov. 13. His body was found 10 days later floating in a pond near Latan Court and Barefoot Circle, in Barefoot Bay. Investigators said it had the makings of a gator attack. Shortly before Riggins was reported missing, he called his girlfriend and told her he'd be in the area breaking into homes, deputies said. "He was going to do burglaries in the Barefoot Bay area with another individual," said Maj. Tod Goodyear, with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Neighbors reported to authorities that they saw two men dressed in black lurking behind homes. Deputies began searching the area and were later joined by more deputies, K-9 units and a sheriff's helicopter. Investigators said Riggins then called his girlfriend to tell her they were being chased and lying low. "Do you still hear them hollering, or did they hunker down?" deputies could be heard saying on radio traffic. Deputies called off the search that night, but then Riggins' family reported him missing less than 24 hours later. "He probably went into the lake to hide from the officers and the dog, and came across that gator," Goodyear said. "To hide somewhere to try and get away, and then meeting up with an animal like that, no, I've never had that happen before." "He hid in the wrong place," said Laura Farris, a Barefoot Bay resident. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office dive team encountered the same gator while recovering the man's body, and the animal had to be euthanized by a trapper from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Inside the gator's stomach, the medical examiner found proof of how Riggins was killed. "I would say it's poetic justice, you want to sit there and steal from people," Barefoot Bay resident Chuck Stokes said. Investigators said the other man thought to be breaking into homes with Riggins has not cooperated with the case, but so far he has not been charged. |

If the pond is on private lands I wonder if the owner will be sued by the burglars family. If public lands I wonder if they'll try to sue the government if there aren't any "warning alligators" signs clearly visible. hands up, don't chomp. thievug lives matter. |

PALM BAY, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a man who may have hidden as officers investigated reports of two suspicious men in a Florida community targeted by recent burglaries was killed by an 11-foot alligator. Brevard County Sheriff's Maj. Tod Goodyear says 22-year-old Matthew Riggins told his girlfriend he would be in Barefoot Bay to commit burglaries with another suspect. Authorities received calls Nov. 13 about two suspicious men in black walking behind homes and investigated. Riggins was reported missing the next day. Goodyear said sheriff's divers recovered Riggins' body 10 days later in a nearby lake and the injuries were consistent with an alligator attack. Authorities said Riggins had drowned and the alligator, which behaved aggressively toward divers, was trapped and euthanized. Tod Goodyear with BCSO. FLORIDA TODAY Brevard couple bag bull gator Deputies responded to calls in Barefoot Bay on Nov. 13 that there were two men dressed in black walking behind area houses, who ran from responding officers. Later that day, Riggins was reported missing to the Palm Bay Police Department. Police searching the area reported hearing "yelling" but could not determine the source that night, Goodyear said. Ten days later, Riggins' body was found in the lake. Sheriff's dive team members encountered an 11-foot alligator behaving aggressively while recovering the body, according to BCSO. "When the body was found, it had injuries that were consistent with an alligator attack," Goodyear said. The plot thickens....
The cops heard yelling while searching but didn't know where it was coming from... Humm. . Maybe ![]() Is the partner in crime in custody ? Has he been officially charged? Could he end up as dessert for gators? And a alligator who was be having 'aggressively.' was killed. ![]() But was it THE alligator or not ? Conflicting reports. This reminds me of the movie Jaws, when they wanted to pass a big shark off as THE SHARK. In September a 12 ft - 2 inch, Bull (male) alligator was bagged. Perhaps one of his brothers is alive & now a man eater ![]() |

Possibly a good way of keeping the prison population down.
Throw the low life's to the Gators. Like the Romans with the Christians and Lions. Could even become Floridas State sport. |
