Topic: portland finds a new way to produce electricty | |
---|---|
![]() Hydroelectric turbines have been installed in one of the main water pipelines in Portland, Oregon, utilizing the water pressure to produce electricity. The turbines work where water is flowing downhill, and are already recouping some of the energy cost in keeping the water system running. When fully in place, these pipe generators can power hundreds of thousands of homes. Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, followed his dream of “helping water become more sustainable” by developing this smart piping system. Not only are they electricity generators, they also have state of the art sensors to detect change in water pressure to keep pipes from bursting, and the ability to detect if drinking water is contaminated. video here |

This pic is actually not a photo of the generators.
It is a photo of some valve actuators. The actual generators in the article are quite a bit larger. |

I remember when we lived in Ontario, Canada that electricity was referred to as "hydro" because of how it was generated. People would say it was a hydro bill, the hydro is out, there were fuses in the hydro box, etc.

I would think if we just tried harder we could use a lot of technology to make running our community services cheaper.
Everyone wants to get all peeved about the ADA being "expensive " but if you knew the number of people who are able to be independent and self supporting because of it you would be saying make them enforce the codes even more. It would cost less than $300 at current costs to have federally insured mortgage require that new homes be built so the homeowners would have at least one accessible entrance/exit, bathroom, and at least one bedroom so that if you get sick, hurt, or age you are not forced into a rehabilitation bed to the tune of $20,000 a month ( that guess who usually end up paying for; taxpayers? Certainly not the banks that repossess the homes when family can't afford to stay there anymore. Common sense legislation? |
