A Mississippi inmate who escaped from jail last week took a Vicksburg family hostage — but one of the captives was able to break free and fatally shoot the criminal, authorities confirmed.

Rafael McCloud, 34, was killed in Thursday's shooting, police confirmed.

He reportedly entered the home after a man went out to start his car early Thursday.

McCloud held the man, woman and toddler hostage, reportedly stabbing the man and hitting the woman in the head, but the wife was later allowed to leave the bathroom where they were held, returned with a gun and shot McCloud, the Vicksburg Post reports.

The woman then handed the gun to her husband, who fired several more shots at the escaped felon, the newspaper said.

McCloud was found dead in the bathtub with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head, authorities said.

McCloud slipped out of Warren County Jail on March 2 after attacking a jailer with a handmade shank, police said.

A grand jury indicted McCloud in January on charges of capital murder, sexual battery, rape, arson, home invasion, being a felon in possession of a firearm and grand larceny auto theft in the July slaying of 69-year-old Sharon Wilson.

More than two dozen officers helped in the search for McCloud.
