One used here in the South alot....

"Bless her/his heart...."

Sounds nice right? Not really...say a guy is trying to use a phillips head screwdriver on a straight head screw....An older Southern Belle may shake her head and say "Bless his heart...." and she really means 'Damn he's dumb" laugh

last week doing Grandma duty and babsitting my one year old grandson

15 year old son is in living room playing Playstation and getting mad at his game ...pretty soon I hear a curse word slip out

I holler from the kitchen

" little pitchers have big ears ya know"

then had to explain to him what that meant bigsmile

Yeah, that one always cracks me up. Who wants to have sex with a button?

I can't think of any in particular this second. But my love of things historical, cause me to really enjoy some of the older ones which use references that are meaningless in modern times, just because they DO have those references in them.

Like "don't put the cart before the horse." Almost no one uses horse drawn carts any more, and almost no one uses the word "before" to mean "in front of." So using such phrases, is a similar bit of fun, to using an antique but still useful tool or piece of clothing.

I don't want to sidetrack this thread into politics, so I'll just mention that there are plenty of old "wise sayings" which aren't really "wise" at all, and which grind me every time someone quotes them.

Especially for English majors. Was "two" referring back to the bird, or the hand?
