Police officer shot, gunman captured

A U.S. Capitol Police officer was shot Monday at the Capitol Visitor Center complex in Washington, D.C., and the shooter was taken into custody, Capitol officials and police said.

The event unfolded with Congress on recess and lawmakers back in their districts.

The shooting occurred in the visitors center of the sprawling Capitol complex. Staffers, reporters and others were told to "shelter in place" and not allowed to leave their offices. The White House and the Capitol complex were put on lockdown.

The police officer who was shot was not believed to be seriously injured.

Capitol police did not immediately return calls and no further information was available.

Saw this on Facebook...after reading the public comments...wow...things like this used to upset us...now it's like people don't care or they laugh and celebrate...darn shame...I wonder if we will ever love and respect our government or if they will just keep screwing us till we don't care at all...

Thank God for the cops and their quick reaction...hearing that the visitors center was full of children...school field trips n all.

Glad to here he's ok. I hope it wasn't another vet. That would hurt.
